Hey everyone, here's a little story that makes every collector's heart race.

A few weeks ago, Heritage had their usual Sunday auction. One lot had no picture. And I mean, who bids on a poster without an image?

Me.

I read the description, and it sounded good:

"LOST IN A BIG CITY (Arrow Film, 1923). Rolled, Fine/Very Fine. Identical One Sheets (2) (27” X 41”) Drama.

Starring John Lowell, Baby Ivy Ward, Jane Thomas, Charles Byer, Evangeline Russell, Edgar Keller, Whitney Haley, and Eddie Phillips. Directed by George Irving. Unrestored posters display signs of use. May include edge and handling wear, toning, chips, tears, noticeable staining, cellophane tape on the verso, faint rippling, creasing, and unobtrusive smudging."

Rolled. Fine/Very Fine. Identical One Sheets. Stone litho.

I snagged both together for $20. Plus buyer's premium. That's still below flea-market level. I did a bit of research afterward and found the poster. The look was awesome. Exactly my style. Everything I like. So I was hoping these were the real deal.

Anyway. Nobody wanted them. Except one guy. But I outbid him at $20. Ha ha. When I want something, I get it. Mostly.

Last time one sold was back in 2014 on eMoviePoster in pretty rough shape for $366 (see pic). And they only sold it once. And now I've got two in top condition. Two posters over 100 years old. I'm completely blown away, that's how much I love this.

Next week I'm shipping them to France to get them washed, linen-backed, and tastefully restored. I'll list one on eBay for $1200, and keep the other.

I'm also considering getting the artwork professionally photographed, printing a small limited run on premium paper, and then selling them on eBay. It's public domain now anyway—no more copyrights.

The irony of the whole thing is that the (lost) film is actually about a blind girl. Blind. No picture. And let's face it, blind people generally don't get much joy out of old posters anyway. Except maybe the smell of vintage paper. 😏

Stuff like this is what I'd love to happen every time I overspend... :-)

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Happy Collecting.

PS

By the way, if any of you are on Instagram: You can find me there as "FeinePoster". See you there.

I’ve almost stuck to my personal directive and haven’t bought any new posters. One doesn’t count. As of this morning, Berlin time, it’s mine:

The Premature Burial, 1962
One Sheet, Fine/Very Fine

That adds another beautiful piece to my small Reynold Brown collection.

But now it’s really over for the time being. I need to wait until everything has finally arrived and then properly clean up the database. You lose track far too quickly if you don’t handle it promptly and with discipline.

Just the March auctions at eMoviePoster. But I was already in on those. After that, it’s over … I swear.

A film hardly anyone knows — but I do. And I like it. The poster isn’t worth much, and I didn’t photograph it very well. Still, I like it. I’ll take better photos tomorrow.

Quintet, 1979
Director: Robert Altman

Here is the German version in DIN A1 (23.4" × 33.1").

What doesn’t come across well in the photo is the silvery-gray sheen that perfectly conveys the film’s cold atmosphere.

I’m happy to have it. I associate something with it.

Hi everyone,

this is the Polish poster for the comedy

Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962)
Polish poster (approx. 58 x 84 cm), Fine+

I won it on February 8, 2026 for under $100.

Polish movie posters — and more broadly, posters from the Eastern Bloc during the Cold War — are special. The illustrators often worked without extensive photo or film material as reference. Frequently, they received nothing more than a synopsis, sometimes very brief.

So they turned necessity into virtue and gave their own interpretation plenty of room.

That is exactly what makes them so compelling. For many Western films, there are graphically independent, sometimes radically reduced or even surreal reinterpretations. The so-called “Polish School of Posters” is legendary for a reason.

This particular example was designed in 1963 — one year after the U.S. premiere — by the well-known Polish poster artist Jerzy Flisak.

What truly makes it special: there is a paste-over visible in the top line. In the original printed version, the name of the lead actor, James Stewart, was apparently set as “Steward” — spelled phonetically, as one might have heard it.

Instead of reprinting the entire run, they apparently chose to correct the mistake with a paper paste-over. In a planned economy with limited resources, that was economically far more sensible than commissioning a new print run.

Strictly speaking, this is therefore not a classic “misprint,” but rather a production correction via paste-over. But those are exactly the kinds of details I love. They tell you something about the production conditions, about pragmatism — and about the era in which this poster was created.

I like stories like this. They are what make collecting truly interesting to me.

I should watch the film again ...

One thing is clear: people who professionally ship vintage movie posters mean business. They prepare that valuable cargo for everything that ever happened in a 1950s B-movie — alien invasions, volcanic eruptions, shifts of the Earth’s axis, you name it.

Then the package arrives at your door… and you grab a carpet knife. That’s when you either cut straight into the poster — or into arteries you’ve grown rather attached to.

This cutter (or similar models) is a complete game changer. It cuts only the cardboard. Or the bubble wrap. What it does not do is reach the poster — unless you handle it in a truly spectacularly stupid way.

To quote the Greeks: Eureka.

There are five big boxes full, of Posters waiting to be opened here. Unfortunately, I don’t really know where to put the posters yet because my Baroque portfolios still haven’t arrived. I’ve been waiting for weeks. Horrible.

Anyway. This is the knife.

Hi Everyone,
I just purchased this poster and would love to hear thoughts on it. Lady I purchased it off said her father use to work at the Palais Theater in Melbourne and acquired it in the 70's. From my research the Phillip brothers owned the Palais and the Capital theater. The movie premiered at the Capital theater on 1st May 1926 and was hugely popular. I believe this poster may have been commissioned by the brothers at the time and looking at it, Brunswick records may have paid for some of the costs as well. I can not find another anywhere that looks the same. Maybe someone has another and can confirm.
The poster is in 4 sections a-fixed to backing board.

Hello everybody,

I'm in the finishing stages of a book about the promotional material that was produced around the world for Elvis Presley's first 4 movies.
The book, which will be published later this year by FTD, contains circa 2200 images of posters, lobby cards, standees, pressbooks, stills, heralds, etc. on 490 pages.
The Australian posters and daybills will of course also be presented in the book and I was hoping to get some help with completing the Aussie entries.

What I have of the first 4 films, is the following:
Love Me Tender: 1-sheet, daybill
Loving You: daybill (only in low resolution)
Jailhouse Rock: 1-sheet, daybill (first issue), daybill (60's re-issue, in 3 color variations), glass slide
King Creole: 1-sheet (only in low resolution), daybill (first issue in two variations, with and without age rating)

If anybody is able and willing to share missing posters (and other material not mentioned above), I would appreciate that very much!
Also upgrades of the items I only have in low resolution are very welcome. As are vintage newspaper advertisements for the screenings of these movies in Australia.
And if any of the experts here is able to narrow the dates of the re-runs of these movies in the 60's/70's down to an exact month and year, that would be fantastic as well.

It goes without saying that any helpful person will be credited in the book. Thanks!
Bob

HI Gang,

Some disturbing news. A fellow friend and collector Michael and his son Jason have been burglarized.

They have spent many many years to acquire some rare autographs from directors and movie stars, all on original movie posters.

The
theft occurred in Los Angeles Calif. in a storage locker. They have a
flat file in the locker containing posters and someone knew.

If
there is such thing as good news? These posters are very unique and
easy to separate from the rest out there, due to the autographs.

Pretty
much all poster are linen backed by me. I have been able to retrieve
some images, but unfortunately some of the poster that I worked on are from a very long time ago. Incl. the uber rare Clock Work Orange advance Top Hat poster signed by Malcolm McDowell.

Here is a list and some pics. I kindly ask you all to keep an eye/ear out there. Maybe admin can pin this?

Hello collectors

Wondering about the authenticity of this recently acquired Stalker poster before the expense of linen backing and framing.

Date of copyright matches printer's address in France for the years. But could still be a reproduction? as the condition seems very fine. The close up shot with "Gaumont presents" offers some residual splotches that I imagine are traces of offset printing and that a reproduction would not print (outside the actual area of artwork) which makes me think it is an original. Do we think it's authentic?

Does the collective wisdom here favor linen backing for French 120x160 one sheets?
I was thinking of flattening (shower steam and a week or so of compression) and then sending away for mounting "floating" inside frame (as with this japanese poster which has no backing below). But am concerned the little blocks used to float it inside frame would create imperfections in the fine condition artwork.

Welcome any thoughts - especially photos of framing suggestions.

Thanks for your time
