A Hard Days Night / 2001 A Space Odyssey/ Julius Caesar

Hi all, hoping the experts out there can provide me with some accurate release dating on the Australian One Sheets of these titles pictured. Thanks in advance for any input recieved.

  •  My thoughts regarding the release periods of the three posters.

2001; A Space Odyssey is most likely a first release poster.

A Hard Day's Night could be a 1960's second printing, or even for an official re-release if one occurred. I don't believe it was printed for the film's first release but have no proof of this.

    Julius Caesar is a 1960's re-release poster.

It would be great to hear what others think.
  • Thanks Hondo for your input, always helpful but as you say, would love to hear more from others if they have the time particularly on the Beatles poster?
  • Julius Caesar looks original to me. It was released again in the 60's with the MGM lion logo common to that period.

I have revised my opinion that the Julius Caesar one sheet is a 1960's re-release poster, and as Darolo said I do agree now that it is an original 1950's poster.

My thinking had been based on the following, The word masterpiece printer's credit which isn't normally applied on a first release poster, the absence of a printer's credit which was often the case on a re-release poster, the black and white section, and finally the original Australian daybill's tagline being shown as All Hail.

The reason for my change of thinking is as follows. I have viewed again the copy in question and found that the one sheet has the correct logo application of An MGM Picture printed on it. This style of credit is from that period of time. The absence of a printer's credit was on checking out with my vast MGM one sheet images folder, was found that sometimes often this was the case during the early 1950's. Finally the image of the raised sword from the original artwork ties in.

Along with the original sighted single copy Australian daybill this one sheet is extremely rare.
  • Thanks to darolo and Hondo for their comments on the posters. Although the Hard Day's night is still not a certain only a 'could be' courtesy of Hondo. Anyone out there able to confirm its release?
  • As the A Hard Day's Night Australian one sheet poster appears to be the only sighted copy of this poster, I am really curious to know if anyone believes it to be an original one sheet poster printed for the 1964 release or not?
  • my guess with Hard Day's Night is original

There are a number of second printings for Elvis films that look very similar in the format and lesser artwork to the one Ben has. The lack of printer's details is also a pointer that it might be a slightly later printing. My guess is that Hard Days Night is a second or later printing but hard to know for sure without seeing an original.

It possibly could be, but there certainly is no definite proof to support this.

Your thinking John agrees exactly with my earlier expressed thoughts regarding the film's origins. The Parlophone plug that appears on the Robert Butron daybill, along with the usual Released Thru words that would normally have  proceeded the United Artists wording In their logo are absent from the poster.

These two points along with the absence of a printer's credit and the applied lesser artwork has to throw doubt in my mind of any thinking that the one sheet in question was printed for the original Australian first release.

Is there another different designed one sheet out there somewhere?

  • Thanks for your analysis. I tend to agree and it would be fair to say that it could be a second printing. Still to see an original first release one sheet which I never have would be great as others are saying.
  • Thanks to everyone who contributed to my post, it was much appreciated.
