Freaks & Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde

I had the  great experience in 1976 to attend a cinema in NSW to see  a  double bill of Freaks ( 1933 ) & Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde ( 1931 ). For Freaks it was the first release in Australia since being banned in 1933 by the Australian censor. Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde had long been unseen and thought lost since MGM purchased it in 1941. In 1975 both films were passed by the censor for 35mm public exhibition in Australia  with the NRC censorship rating given. I enjoyed both films and the audience and I laughed at times at Fredric March's performance as Dr. Jekyll. The end scene of Freaks was haunting and still comes to mind today.

What I find interesting is as  almost all films released in Australia in the 1970s have some sort of film poster images viewable on Google if you search long enough. Where then  is the poster  material on Freaks & Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde? No daybill, one sheet, pressbook or anything else can be located.

Does anyone have any poster material they can share images  with us or information of any kind that will through some light on this mystery?

  • I have never seen Australian posters for these films. Even though the censors passed them with the NRC rating, I wonder if they were actually "officially" released or just given a special screening at one of the boutique cinemas.

Back in the 1980s, there was a screening in Sydney of Dial M for Murder with 3D glasses, etc. I took my daughter to that and the cinema was full. It screened for about two or three weeks but I don't think any posters were specifically printed as it wasn't an "official" release.

  • I viewed the films at the Lyric Theatre in Newcastle at a packed night screening. The double bill was an official release and ran for one week. The double bill was also screened at the Boulevard Red in Canberra Sunday the  first of  March, 1976.

  • I agree that you would think that there would be some posters out there somewhere.

  • That's a poster I would love to look at too...
  • Reg, that is first rate, is it yours?
  • Great poster and along with the 40,000 Horsemen daybill   posters I would love to own.

  • This is a copy of a newspaper advertisement for the Canberra screening in 1976. Surely there was some form of poster printed and if so where is it?

  • Is there not a good chance if one surfaces it will simply be one of the multitudes of very simple, screen printed dual colour daybills?
  • If that advert didn't pack 'em in, nothing would have.
  • I think this might be a daybill for "Freaks", they only misprinted the title...

  • Researching further into the release of the double of Freaks and Dr.Jekyll And Mr.Hyde in Australia in 1976, I have now come up with some more thoughts.

Firstly some relevant information edited from the the previous material that was posted on this thread during March 1976 follows below..

I viewed the films at the Lyric Theatre in Newcastle at a packed night screening. The double bill was an official release and ran for one week. The double bill was also screened at the Boulevard Red in Canberra Sunday the  first of  March, 1976.

It is now confirmed that the film double also played in 35mm in March 1976 an the Sydney University Union Theatre  with limited screenings in 1976 and 1977.

No screenings of this double located all in Melbourne, Victoria,  There were possibly screenings there and also elsewhere in Australia but access to this information due to copyright laws is very restricted.. Overall though any other screenings would appear to have been very limited.

My thinking now is that no traditional film posters were printed for the screenings. On saying that there would surely have had to have been some advertising poster material in some form or another made available for the screenings.
  • The Valhalla in Melbourne opened on 10 June, 1976. I'd be surprised if they didn't screen it.

I have some access to post 1954 Sydney and Melbourne newspaper advertisements, and the only entry for Melbourne found on rechecking that I can locate is a one late night 11.15 p.m. screening of the double in 1979 at an unknown cinema.  On saying this it is possible that there were other screenings in Melbourne as well.
