Need some of the more seasoned members like Bruce and Rich to chip in...

So Poster Mountain has now Spawned 4th Cone.

John Davis once was an apprentice of ?  I think there were at least two more restorers from the same guy.  Help!

  • Its either Igor edelmen or Joe Hernandez. Don't recall.
  • So 4th cone is poster mountain?  :-?

1.0 - Jose Ma. Carpio  (Source) (Cinemonde on Polk Street)
    1.1 - Joe Hernandez (Studio C)
1.1.1 - Judy Jones (The Poster Patch)
1.1.2 - John Davis (Poster Mountain)
    1.1.2.1 Melissa, Katie, & Chelsea (4th Cone)
1.1.3 - Gordon Christman (Gordon G. Christman Restoration)
1.1.4 - Sylvia Locken (Precision Restoration)
1.1.5 - Susan Olson (Deceased - here is a very nice tribute.  She appears to have been a great gal)
1.1.6 - Carol Tincup (Carol Tincup Fine Art Restoration) Can't find a site though.
    1.1.7 - Diane Jeffrey (Studio C)
1.1.8 - Jaime and Norma Mendez (Jaime Mendez Restoration)

That's all I have so far...  The question now is how many restorers in the US aren't from the Joe Hernandez school?

2.0 Igor Edleman (Edelman Restoration Studio) (Now run by Lena and Lara - not sure who the apprentice is)
2.1 Mario Cueva (Lumiere Poster Restoration)
  • edited June 2014
3.0 J. Fields Studio (Know Papersmith)
    3.1 Chris Cloutier (Posterfix)
  • How in the world did Jose Carpio get in this? He is not a restorer and never owned a restoration studio.

HAS 100% honest condition descriptions - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS auctions where the winner is the higher of two real bidders - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS "buyers premiums" - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "reserves or starts over $1 - NOT eMoviePoster.com

  • Ok... Joe Hernandez listed him as a mentor. Maybe Jose gave him posters to back... Thanks! Anything else you could add would be awesome!

Jose Carpio gave Joe H a ton of work when he started, but that is all. Igor predated Joe H by a good ten years,

Diane J became partners with Joe in Studio C a few years after it began, and then she bought him out and owns it completely. Your chart should reflect this far better.

The second restorer after Igor was Jim Sanchez, who mostly did lobby cards (also window cards, inserts and half-sheets, few larger), and he did TONS of restoration in the 1970s and 1980s. Sometime in the early 2000's he retired, and he still calls me every now and again.

There is also Judy Jones (who I believed learned from Joe H, but maybe Jim S), and legendary collector Crowell Havens Beech, who was self-taught.

There was Sei Peterson in the early 1990s, who started somewhere else that I can't remember (but not on your chart). He was based in Baltimore.

There was some New York guy who did a lot of expensive stuff in the 1980s and 1990s, but he wasn't as good as Igor. I will try to come up with his name.

Igor was a true fine artist (he could re-create anything with watercolors or oils), and I don't think anyone working today is as good as he was at his best.

Joe Hernandez was a complete nut (and sadly, a thief) but there was no one better with chemical restoration (but he likely acrylics, and he was willing to "improve" on what was printed by enhancing it, which was totally unethical). But many of Jose's and Sotheby's best items were "dipped in paint" by Joe, and brought staggering amounts of money, and he was so good that few if any of the buyers had any idea how much restoration the posters had.

Lorra begatting in the resto world...
?  Did I misspell something here?
  • Lorra = Lot of...Brit slang made famous by Cilla Black
Begatting = Genesis 5, the procreation of man.
    Resto...
  • Well I was hoping some MOPO folks would have jumped in and added some info.  May have to take it directly to them at some point.
  • Larry Toth owned/started Papersmith.

Ian from M & W Graphics started at Papersmith

Josh Tangeman bought Papersmith from Larry Toth - it went under, stories abound I am told...

Michael Brewster (Studio M, Sydney, Australia) started with J Fields Studio also did time with the Chisholm Gallery & the Chisholm Larsson Gallery.

  • So what is the connection between j fields and papersmith?
  • Don't know. Papersmith came out of J Fields?
  • I'm going to work on this a bit more...

  • I aways thought John Davis was originally at Studio C  ?
  • Right... Owned by Joe Hernandez. That is in the outline.
  • This is really helpful - thanks Charlie. I thought 4th Cone girls worked in Poster Mountain, so thanks for clarifying.

I heard they are really good.
