The poster market

Howdy!

I was just ruminating over breakfast this morning - the more I collect, the less there is that I don't have and that can tend to warp my perception. What do you guys think about the current poster market? Are there less quality titles around lately? I feel like I've been getting some nice additions to my collection, but haven't had many OMG moments over the last year or so.

Hi Mark, i agree with your comment that there are less quality titles around of late. EMP had a great run of rare daybill titles in 2011 to 2013, that seems to have dropped off. HA has picked up of late with quality titles. Ebay the occasional over last few years. But im fairly new to the game abd would love to hear from others from current back to early 2000s.

Other thoughts..aussies like to hoard and sit on  collections? No large finds?

  • Hoard and sit...after you have been at if or a while, you tend to have a lot of the great stuff you want (great to you I mean, not necessarily to others).

Hate to say it, but I think until people lose interest or start to drop off, the great titles won't really surface.

If you've been hunting a great piece for a long time, how likely would you be to give it up?

You know it won't be any time soon that you will get another opportunity to pick it up...

  • I guess you're right...I've not seen posters I've owned for more than a decade surface again for purchase, so I guess if someone else was hunting it, they'd be having a hard time finding it!

It's the great paradox - I'm not about to sell mine, but I expect someone else to sell their's!  =)
  • Seems like everything I want these days are rare Australian One Sheets...  I am organizing my posters and ran across the Death Defying Acts poster I got from Ves...  All is good.

I thought we established Australian posters are CRAP...CRAP...don't bother ;)

Just old ones.  I think modern Aussie posters rock!
  • I think this is just the general experience of most collectors who have been in the hobby for a while.

After you acquire a good percentage of the paper your have been looking for it simply becomes harder and harder to fill in the missing pieces.   This leads to the perspective that "nothing good is available right now" but really that is only because you have already obtained a copy of whatever you were looking for in the beginning.

Eventually most titles come around at some point - it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time really...and of course the challenge is part of the fun!
  • Not quite sure I agree with some of that Chris.

There's titles I have, that I keep looking for to see how they fair on the bay, or even dealers sites, and these posters haven't came up in years. So if I was looking for them I'd be out of luck.

Quality item's there are a few about, but not to the extent they were 10-15 years back. In these case's eventually means every 20 odd years... if your lucky.
  • I agree with Chris.
  • I agree with David.

  • Things go in cycles (since I have done this full time for 26 years, and have bought posters for 47 years, I have been through several of them!).

If you have a group of top collectors who are in the same age bracket (and you often do) then when they hit their 60s or 70s they one by one start to sell off their large collections (or their heirs do) and then you have  a period where there is "too much" for sale.

Then, after it is all absorbed, you have a dry period where there is too little for sale.

Give it time and it will always swing back the other way).

Here is a handy checklist to help tell eMoviePoster.com apart from all other major auctions!
HAS lifetime guarantees on every item - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS unrestored and unenhanced images - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS 100% honest condition descriptions - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS auctions where the winner is the higher of two real bidders - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS "buyers premiums" - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "reserves or starts over $1 - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS hidden bidder IDs - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS no customer service to speak of - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "nosebleed" shipping charges - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS inadequate packaging - NOT eMoviePoster.com

    Hi Bruce,

Where do you think we might be sitting regarding the next "too much" period? How long has it been since you saw the last one?

  •  Keeping a lookout.

I'm feeling the "drought" too. But frankly im not sure if this is a market issue  (can't find my posters) or a boredom issue (lately can't bother to look around for posters).  :s

Just hope when the next wave comes I will be there ready to grab my 3 missing posters...yessir

  • Just 3? lucky you girl. My list is endless!
  • Seems to be a bit of a downturn in Aussie gear atm.

    How are other Countries fairing?

  • I would say some of the Spanish and Argentinian poster appear on the uptick...  I am guess the Aussie market my be suffering from a saturation of older established collectors and the new collectors are all 1980 types...  Interestingly the 1980 types for US posters are super hot!

That'll make David happy with his "30 year Rule"

I was going to post exactly this.  I am in a period where stuff I have wanted is becoming available, often at reasonable prices.  Unfortunately, it is coming at a time where I really need to be looking toward selling it off.

As to the other point, I already have most of the low hanging fruit, so I look at the auctions and see lots of stuff I would have jumped on 10 years ago, but which I already own.
  • There are more posters coming on to the market than ever including many great titles. I have picked up three major collections and a number of smaller ones in the last year which have included some truly great titles. One of the collections came from a long time collector who decided to cash in and concentrate on more specific selected posters.

The other two came from collectors who had passed away. I picked up the latest collection on the weekend - a massive amount of material that will take a lot of time to sort through but there are certainly some incredibly rare posters amongst them all.

So, I think the poster market is exceptionally strong. More collectors, more posters turning up all the time including some truly great items.

Good when I sell, bad when I buy. You people can buy all the spanish posters you like, but keep your dirty hands off my argentineans =)
  • There's posters out there still to be found too.

In the past month I have been offered and/or seen three separate 'collections' of posters (Long Daybills pre 1920s, 40s-50s Daybills & One Sheets) all found under the floorboard homes (being renovated). One guy provided a list that included a Jedda Daybill in amongst it, I told him it was likely worth good money and to fire off a pic so I could ascertain condition and advise price range.

Excited with the potential bonanza he sent one - it turned out to be a monotone, not sure he took the news well...
