Terribly-timed movie releases (like Solo)

edited June 2018 in Movie Talk
So despite good reviews (A- Cinescore), Solo is a certifiable financial fiasco, making only $400 million world-wide. It reportedly cost $400 mill to make/market, so will lose $50 mill when all revenues (inc. streaming) roll in.

The consensus is that Solo would have done much better if held off until Christmas 2018 bc less competition and Last Jedi jet lag.

So what other movies have been terribly timed?

  • I believe it isn't always a case of the timing being off, but sometimes just a matter of too much, too soon, too often.
  • Star Wars right?
  • Fast and the Furious.....what are they up to now #?

After 56 years the brains behind the James Bond series goldmine are the ones that continue to get it right.

PLUS.   The only thing we have to worry about is who will eventually replace Daniel Craig.

I actually agree with you Lawrence.  ;)

    Plus reviews have been mixed.
  • Sadly Solo (which I saw for the 2nd time last night) was punished by the fans for the shambles that Disney has made of the two sequels.

I frequent a fair few Star Wars forums/FB groups and some pretty well organised mass boycotting took place, along with blanket trolling/poor reviews from those that haven't even seen it.

Its a shame as the two 'stories' (Rogue and Solo) were both bloody good and by far superior to any of the prequels or sequels.

It's not just the bizarre path that the sequels took that upset the die hard fans, but also the shambles of merchandising (or lack of it) and when it finally appeared on shelves the fans had already forgotten the movie, unlike the original trilogy where you couldn't move for mountains of Kenner carded goodness lining the isles of every toystore.

Disney had a tried and tested formula (even a guide of waiting 3 years between movie releases) to work with and a mass of expended universe novels to pull material from. Sadly they went with an overly PC Disney/Marvel movie approach which was never going to end well with millions of fans who've had a massive 'buy in' to this franchise for 40 years.
  • Quite simply as Wil put it. It's a money making exercise. Fark I mean from a poster stand point, there are soooo many versions of Stars Wars posters. The die hard fan will pay boo koo for crap posters, just for the sake of collecting.

    Example one

    Birthday  Style

$3000+ dollars for a cake and toys.......go figure???

@collectaholic.   -agree with merchandising aspect. Very little to be seen. I'm in the toy aisles quite a bit in many stores with my 7 1/2 yr old son and very few items.

My two cents-( agree again - Rogue One was a dynamite ride and great ending!)

@Matt- Love the Birthday Cake! Just wish it wasn't so darn pricey!

Hmmmm cake and toys.. what more could anyone want!! And might I add... a candle, multiple uses - blowing them out, melting wax onto a cake, lighting a space, bit of... romance  ;)B)
  • I liked the Jurassic Kingdom (I think it was callted) reboot...am looking forward to the next one.
Pratt is good solid lead these days (well mostly).

The problem was all the shite original series...after the first and maybe the second, the rest were all crap.
