An original artwork “ three bites of the apple”

Today, let me share this. It’s an original artwork from the 1967 film ‘Three Bites of the Apple’ by the artist Ron Lesser. I love the detailed facial expressions and the vibrant color palette used. The storage condition wasn’t great, as there are noticeable stains around the illustration board, but fortunately, the artwork itself remains undamaged, which is good.

Now, here’s my question: Would you clean these stains if you were in my place? Or would you leave them as part of the history they represent?

Comments

  • I think it looks great just as it is!  Congrats!
  • I take a position that a big part of these posters and artwork lies in their history.  I kinda hate when people destroy the history by over restoring to a condition where the piece loses its soul.

Given that, your artwork is in very nice displayable condition.  I think some of these stains come from the period when the artwork was being photographed for the poster.  I'd leave it and enjoy, but you need to do what is right for you.

Most of all, don't restore because you think it increases value.  The increase is seldom more than the cost of the restoration.
  • @jayn_j thank you for your advise.
Indeed, as you say. It's not fatally damaging, so I'll enjoy it as it is, untouched, as part of history.
  • Nice piece! I'd get it framed as it is and display. Congrats!
