1st attempt at linen backing - a good start!

edited April 2024 in Restoration
Hi there, firstly thanks for all the information posted over the years. I spent the last 6 months reading through and have finally made an attempt on a low value poster. I built the frames and managed to source the materials.

I want to also put out a thank you to the Fourth Cone YouTube channel, it was an amazing resource to have to build my confidence. https://www.youtube.com/@FourthConeRestoration

The paper went on to the canvas really smoothly.

The poster I chose was an old insert I bought from one of Bruce's bulk lots, I still quite liked the design though. There was a big black pen mark on the back, but I wasn't looking to get rid of that anyway.

I followed the steps from the forum, combined with the Fourth Cone videos and used the Mylar method for the wet work. Nervously applied it to the paper/canvas and it actually went on really well, no major folds or lumps.

I let it dry and then cut it out. Not bad for a first effort, the only issue was a small section of the border near top left which was slightly raised, I'll hopefully fix that with some more wheat paste when I attempt my next piece.

Thanks again to all the contributors, it took me six months to get the courage up - am going to fix up some more in the coming months. Slowly but surely 😊

  • Yes, a good first effort! But may I suggest you get away from inserts or half-sheets and go to one-sheets? I say this because almost all top restorers solely paperback inserts and half-sheets, and there is a big difference between them and the much thinner paper one-sheets.

Here is a handy checklist to help tell eMoviePoster.com apart from all other major auctions!
HAS lifetime guarantees on every item - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS unrestored and unenhanced images - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS 100% honest condition descriptions - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS auctions where the winner is the higher of two real bidders - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS "buyers premiums" - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "reserves or starts over $1 - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS hidden bidder IDs - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS no customer service to speak of - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "nosebleed" shipping charges - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS inadequate packaging - NOT eMoviePoster.com

  • For my first effort, I am very happy with the result. Next on will be a one sheet of a Carry on up the Khyber that I wanted to rescue. Results to follow!
  • Second go, the 1 sheet was a lot harder, but I'm happy. It's one that has a bit of paper loss, so I might look at some restoration in the near future. The hardest thing was that it lifted a little when I took the top Mylar sheet off, that caused a few wrinkles, but I worked them out slowly.

Could have bleached it a little more I think in a couple of areas. You live and learn!

  • Great efforts! The insert is a heavier paper so a little more difficult to work with. Dsybills ar very good to practice with as the paper is a good weight and the smaller size helps you perfect all the other elements.

Keep up the good work and documentation! That one sheet is a great first effort!
  • looking good
