Film Daily & The Year Book of Motion Pictures

I bought a 1961 copy of "Film Daily - The Yearbook of Motion Pictures" out of curiosity. I wanted to see what was inside.

Well, I discovered there is so much information in each one of these. Theater counts for every country, locations of theaters, every major studio, it lists all the NSS office locations, managers, and store front addresses.

Every film released for that year. I was hoping to find re-releases but did not (yet)... I'll post some pictures tonight.

I also bought a lot of magazines including "Boxoffice", "International Motion Picture Exhibitor", and "Motion Picture Herald". Will see what they have and report back...

  • Cool, look forward to seeing it. I love reading that sort of stuff, I have no desire to collect it but it is often very interesting to read
  • Notice there were actually more theaters in Czech than the UK although there was double the seating capacity in the UK... Wonder what this means for the number of posters issued?
  • South Pacific seating capacity - Australian average per theatre is 685. That seems very high.

the USA has a 650 seat average not counting the drive-ins....seems a little high to me. hard to say. The uptown here in DC seats 864. and were some other large theaters then. Maybe they count multiple showings per day for a total seating count which would reflect a potential attendance/$ amt

to think of it some contemporary theaters must easily reach 5,000 seating
  • Australian cinemas could house more than 10% of the population in 1960. Crikey!
  • Doing some math, there could've been 1,200 cinemas in 1940 in Aus?

If we had a breakdown of how country cinemas there were, we might be able to estimate how daybills were printed back then. Pretty far off I know considering some cinemas purchased multiple copies and posters were reused/passed along to other cinemas.

    Interesting nonetheless.
  • I have auctioned a lot of these, and I have a consignor who keeps sending me a few at a time, so look for more in the future. They range from the 1940s to the 1970s.

The Film Daily Yearbook is a favorite resource of mine.  Have a few from the early 30s and later, maybe half a dozen or so.  Except for the 1949 edition they are all in storage half the world away.  :((

Where is this storage unit?    :D
  • In the deep south guarded by mutant Rotweilers, barbed wire, and my crazy uncle Amok Chuck  :ar!
  • I have another group of these starting at auction this Sunday.
