PosterFix.com - My Experience...

edited May 2022 in Restoration
I have been using Sei Petterson for all my poster repairs and Sei is the Best....... I got an email from Chris Cloutier at posterfix.com who was going to give me a good deal on two posters. As it turns out and after digging for the reviews on this guy he is bad news. I sent him a $300.00US magic poster to get mounted and now he wont return my phone calls, emails or posters. He wanted me to cancel the claim with paypal which I am not going to do.....he wants more money to asend the posters back to me instead of using my UPS account and I would pay to have them shipped back. ...Here is the last email I got ..

Brent

  • The bad reviews on PosterFix were legendary and have been out there available for a long time. I am shocked you didn't look for reviews first on this company before deciding to work with this guy. Myself when getting posters I try to go through LAMP approved dealers for posters, framing, and restoration.

I use Hollywood Poster Frames for framing and then Sue there always sends my posters to Lumiere Poster Restoration if the poster needs to be linenbacked or any restoration done. Right now I have a beaten up Batman 66 poster and a Lady Snowblood poster getting ready to get linenbacked and restoration done from him.
  • Oh, would like to see the before and afters on the Batman. Great poster!

I am with you on the reviews, you can't argue with consistently good review, Lumiere rates well as does Sue at Hollywood Frames.

But what is a 'LAMP Approved Dealer' really mean? The only approval process is that one pays one's annual membership. It's not a ruling industry body it doesn't do anything to censure poorly performing members, it has no formal constitution. Basically it is a good research and information repository and no more.
  • I've been watching the Posterfix videos on YouTube. I'm new to all of this, so I'm trying to absorb everything I can on the subject of poster restoration. I followed the links to their reviews. Their Better Business Bureau rating isn't as bad as described in one review, and I have no idea if the other claims are true and valid or not. Here are my initial thoughts on Posterfix:

    • Generally, they seem rough with their work, especially when removing old tape. A lot of times, they just pull off the tape without any kind of adhesive remover, heat, or anything to help the process. When they do use something as a solvent, it's always Ronsonol lighter fluid. Seems harsh to me, but maybe it's ok? Speed seems to be the most important thing.
    • When they use paints to touch up a poster, they use acrylic paint, which I thought was bad to use because it's fairly permanent and irreversible when completely dry.
    • They list several "wet" services, like cleaning and deacidification, but I've never seen a video where they show this. Perhaps if and when they do this, they don't wipe the posters off with a sponge later in the process, which it seems caused problems for some people here if they did that after some "wet work" earlier.
    • What I think they are really good at is matching colors when they go in a do touch-up work. These paints (like most other paint?), dries darker, so you have to initially start with a lighter color. They seem to do a good job with this.
As a side note, I just researched what is in lighter fluid. Zippo bought Ronsonol a while back, so now their ingredients are the same:

"Light Hydrotreated Distillate (70%)" together with "Hydrotreated Light Naphtha (30%)"

So, I guess it can be used as a "safe" cleaner to remove adhesives?
  • Not sure why it took me six years to see the potential for issues with the title. Retitled...
