Website Feedback & Suggestions

I can't seem to find a thread for this although I assume there is one somewhere... Anyway here are my thoughts

  • First off well done to the forum owners for setting this new forum up quickly: David, Charlie and Matt (?)
  •  Feedback/Suggestions: - I like the graphics design at the top on the screen. I reckon if it were half or 2/3 the height ie a bit smaller that would be better so less scrolling is needed on every (every) and every page.
  • I like the social media sharing functionality - I like the forum is off to a flying start mostly by the administrators.
  • The dark color scheme though I find hurts my eyes. To me that is close to a deal breaker for further visits. Not when I am on the site but when I then look back and forth at another normal light color websites. Don't know many big site have a dark scheme (thanks to God). Get help here -
  • The pagination is missing numbers and quoting comments loses bits due to the color scheme (are there 12 pages or 56 pages ;-) :

image
- Color scheme makes it hard to easily separate a quote from a comment:
image
- Avatars are a bit small. I think bigger avatars makes some people think they are special, and all the hooks to  get people here the better.
Server is flaky (website is down sometimes and faulty other times:

  • There are dots between the '1 2 ... 5 6' you just can't see them. I have also gotten the server busy but only in the US AM else I've not encountered it down any other time. I think unless it is a regular occurrence it happens to most. One of the other forums was down yesterday when I went to visit and then back up... As far as the color, I agree it may need an adjustment but I've not started having nightmares or migraines... Pasting suck sometimes but that because this forum can take HTML. You just have to paste it in the HTML side to avoid it associating formatting. This is not a problem anywhere else because they don't take HTML. David, Matt and I will talk it over. Thanks for your thoughts!
  • Is there a way to see a list of members?
  • No, only Admins can. Don't know if we can change that either. There are 37 members now.

    Get to work!
  • You're talking to the dumb one out of the three. ;)
  • And if there are 37 members how many of them have actually posted to the forum? If some have not posted to the forum why do you think they have not posted? I do think the color scheme could be changed or maybe each member can change it themselves in their preferences. Just a suggestion. Maybe each member could customize their own page through the preferences such as background color, theme, etc.
  • That's a good idea Randy, we'll look into that. There are only a few who haven't posted. You'll have to ask them why.
  • Okay you tell me who hasn't posted and I will track them down :D
  • Judging by your poster collection, you've probably got a pretty big knife collection too. 8-X
  • :D

Knives, Guns. Maybe a machete or two lmao. I will use brute force to get these members to post

    ;)

Thanks for the comments Steve. I had to edit it out the formatting you had applied as it was too hard to read, I did not edit the content.

Yes Charlie, Matt and I certainly are the biggest contributors of comments, but then we do spend a lot of time talking crap to each other too, and no one piles it on like Charlie and Matt - but that said there is a fair amount of commentary by other members as the place settles and finds its niche.

Design: Is a personal thing and this site is designed to be different from the rest, it's not going to suit everyone we accept that, but I can probably pull up dozens of comments about the other poster forums as to their design or lack thereof. If design keeps people out then obviously changing it will just as likely keep (different) people out too.

I take your comments about the pagination have fixed the css so it is readable.

The software and the hosting is supplied, we pay (lease/rent) both, I am not so sure it is "flakey" but I imagine it is hosted on a shared server and perhaps will suffer the odd and short outage but nothing too major and as Charlie says nothing no one else has never suffered.

I've increased the size of the Avatars by almost 50%, if people want to see even bigger avatars they should click on the avatar ;) . I'll see what I can do about the site banner - I would suggest finger exercises to strengthen them in the meantime... ;p

    edit: adjusted banner size

It's early days, we're a fortnight old and still adjusting things as we go along, that said we may never get it right but Matt is still learning how to edit in the back end and if we let him loose on the code who knows what we will become.

    Insert movie reference here?

  • The dark color scheme is hard on my eyes as well. It would be great if I could adjust solely how I see it. No need to change it for others.

Hey I like the formatting I had! It helped me get across my point re site hard to see, well I was hoping it did :-p

The dark colors to me (physically painful on the eyes) is my biggest issue, with all others combined being negligible in comparison.

The site was down for me for at least 3 hours about 5 days ago where this site redirected to a vanillaforums support page showing a running commentary of their techies progress in resolving an issue why all the forums were down. It had something to do with DNS  / over capacity

Oh, I like that the header image has reduced in size. A much better size in my opinion. The new image is a bit fuzzy though. Do you want to send it to me to resize with better quality. On seeing the blurry avatars, I suspect the header image may also be suffering the same issue... maybe there is a setting somewhere in admin regarding image size/quality?

    Keep up the good work

Looks like the forum was down for the Heartbleed thing:  http://status.vanillaforums.com/

No need to change passwords, they were not effected by it...

  • Have I done this trying to change my Avatar... it's Steve's fault.. :-??
  • You're in the clear Paul... It was a big deal everywhere. Though they are recommending you change passwords for yahoo, Facebook, tumblr, and google/gmail.,,,
  • No Charlie, don't humour him we all know it's Paul's fault :ar!
  • Im not liking the new look. Was easier to read before..
  • At the moment I am getting the following error about on about every second thread I open:

    image
  • Server issues, we keep getting booted off the forum and have to sign in again. Dave has raised the issue with Vanilla.
  • Im not liking the new look. Was easier to read before..
I think it is still a work in progress. Fonts (stylesheets) are still being tweaked I imagine. I think the new whitish background is soooo much better
    :-bd

Got another error trying to post this comment:

@ Reg - Yeah like I said to Steve earlier, change the style to suit one person and you're bound to not suit another.

@ Steve - glad you like the new look. We already know there is server issues and stated so, we probably don't need reminding.

The fonts were changed earlier, I'm happy how they look, the stylesheets have been tweaked the only changes we will make for the moment will be to issues rather than to suit personal tastes

I think you will find the last 2 messages were being created at the same time and as there is no function here to say someone just posted a new message as I go to post a message (like APF and NS4).... HOW AM THEN TO KNOW ABOUT THE SERVER PROBLEM YOU ARE HAVING - I AM NOT PSYCHIC!!!!   :-t

Just for that comment, I give you a new message problem! (G*d know what that refers to):

  • Thanks
  • Can the different posts be more clearly separated from each other? Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion Bruce, a little figuring out - how does that look? Alternate grey/white and even better you can quickly see which comments are yours (baby blue).

    Snazzy is the word...
    :-c
  • That looks better, thanks Dave,
  • Baby blue is better than khaki green. ;)
  • That is much better to these tired old eyes!
