Poster restoration

Having read members comments regarding their experiences with restorers, is there a list of people that members use? or recommend?

I've only had one poster restored and was very happy with the results but have nothing to judge the experience on, just the experiences of other members who have been very helpful with there advice.

I've used four, all of whom I have no problems recommending: Dario (Vintage Move Art); Poster Mountain; Fourth Cone Restoration; Studio M

  • Fantastic thanks. I had seen Dario online and a couple of others, I'll give him a try.

One of the reasons I posted the thread was because I noticed members using restorers from other countries.

It got me thinking is there people out there that members use for a particular service / preference / time limit for it to be completed / if the restorer had time to work on it, or combo of all, even if they have to send it overseas?

  • If Dario lived on the moon i would still send my posters to him..great service and quality, he takes you on the journey. Unfortunately for a while ive had no posters that require linen backing for dario, but when i did use him i was super pleased
  • Great, well that sums it up really. Thanks.

I think David uses forth cone for larger posters whilst dario for the smaller stuff.

Ive used studio m but mainly for simple linen backings jobs.

It can be a little daunting sending a loved poster overseas for the first time but if you package it well, label it well and send express post (even regular with tracking) all will be OK!!

  • So….. if you bought a poster from overseas i.e US One sheet- would you ship it straight to the restorer over there?

Yep ive done that a few times from ebay sellers and auction houses straight  to the restorer. Never had a problem, as long as you known the condition of the poster
  • Sven is correct, my first port of call has been Dario for many years, but he doesn't do larger pieces bigger than an Italian 1P (39″ x 55″). Hence Fourth Cone and Poster Mountain, I also use locally, Studio M.
  • Thank you guys!

    Much kindness all around.

    Sincerely,
    dario.
  • Looks like i'll be contacting Dario when needed. Thanks for the advice.
  • Does anyone give classes or lessons in house or on line for linen backing?
  • Not really. There was a rumor that a prominent restorer would give a weekend workshop for $5,000.

Plus I would say no amount of instruction will replace just jumping in (with throw always of course)…
  • Sounds good. I do have a source for throw away. Thank you

agree; video's and reading only get you so far before you have to dive in; as the saying goes, Experience is the teacher. But then you will need helpful hints along the way to learn those practices that respond to the paper your working on; Charlie and Dario have offered the most advice in the last 5-7 years.
  • You are absolutely correct. I am putting together my SOP for the basics. I built out a place in the basement to work, and I am visiting with a paper conservator this week. All advice is welcome and appreciated. Thank you
