MAJOR hack of eBay accounts

This happened TWO MONTHS ago and they only NOW got around to advising users to change their passwords? And they won't admit how many were stolen, but they do say "a large number of accounts"?

Unconscionable!

  • Everyone should probably change their PW... Two months is ridiculous!
  • I agree it is WORSE that it took them SIX WEEKS to even discover the theft of tens of millions of customer accounts!

And it took two more weeks to announce it? And WHERE is the announcement on eBay's home page (or when you go to sign in)?

They seem far more concerned with "managing" this than with alerting and protecting their customers!

  • Yowzer.

Still, happens to the best of them. My credit card got 'stolen' off a website I had made a purchase on recently, seems I was one of thousands. My bank saw a transaction on my card that didn't fit with my normal patterns and stopped the payment and froze my credit card.

It was $9.30 at a Millenium Mall (somewhere in the world). So no harm done but still, very frustrating - the first I knew of it was when the bank contacted me (via text) to ask me to call them about the unusual activity. When I checked with the website it seems they knew and had been taking steps to fix their site but hadn't got round to letting their customers know. Grrrr.
  • I think mine was hacked and some jerk used it to buy a lot of shit posters from spook shows and posters from forgotten crap movies like "Strange world" and such ... Oh, wait.... that was me :)

  • "eBay came under renewed pressure today over a massive cyber attack as three US states began investigating the e-commerce company's security practices. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman requested eBay provide free credit monitoring for everyone affected, according to a person familiar with the matter."

  • Now that eBay sees they can't sweep this under the table and forget it, they have taken a REALLY weird action!

They recognize that many auctions were affected by bidders who forgot to change their passwords on snipe programs, and they have announced that any seller can cancel auction transactions for an 11-day period!

Of course, this will infuriate the high bidders on those items, who rightfully won, and now are having those items taken away from them (it is up to the seller to decide, and of course they will cancel any result they deem too low, regardless of whether there were any missed bids at all).

While this may gain eBay some good feeling from auction sellers, it will likely be more than offset from bad feelings from auction bidders, but I suspect the main reason for this is to protect themselves from seller lawsuits.

  • Well that's just bloody stupid. Still nothing will really happen, it's not like there is major competition out there. Best people can do is have a second trading option (like a proper online shop) and work on building their business in there as well. I hope everyone remembered to change their PayPal password too, some of us have liked accounts.
  • Yeah, I changed my password.
  • Still a good place to buy posters though..
