State of relations amongst the forums?

So what's the scoop? Are relations good? It seems many of theAPF gang are here. Holiday has left APF.

Things are chugging along just fine here. We have our ups and downs of course but some people like to see what happening in both forums. Gives them a sense of variety.

I personally don't visit the APF that much, maybe half a dozen times a year.  I've been busy with work, selling my house and down sizing. Basically getting rid of all my crap.(not posters).

  • The VMPF-APF relationship isn't that great.  They (Thierry) won't let anyone mention VMPF without getting his panties in a twist.  We don't care so much.  I post over there every once in a while, mainly when Jeff is trying to show off his restoration knowledge which is limited to "ask Poster Mountain" and posting videos I posted back when you were in the forum.  APF also started a stated policy of "if you don't post within six months" they will delete you. I chatted with Holiday a while back and he is happy with his downsized collection but is over all the APF drama.  Basically a Jeff moderated forum with authoritarian/autocratic Thierry-Ian rule.  Then there is the routine gang up on Bruce bashing every quarter or so.  We've managed to avoid most of the drama over here with the zero tolerance moderation of dealer posts and any derogatory threads...
  • Note: I've moved this to a members only section...
  • We should mention that Jeff joined here in disguise as Papergatherer just after Rosa quit the APF.....

    Long story short.

The creep left with his tail between his legs.

  • I quit posting everywhere but here due to endless troll posts after my posts. If it happens here, then I will stop posting here as well.

The way I see it, forums should be fun, and the others were anything but that for me. I am happy to share my knowledge in a drama-free environment, and that describes this forum well.

I wish there were more people talking about posters (beyond posting what they own) because I have been doing this full-time for 27 years and I am STILL learning lots of new stuff all the time!

Here is a handy checklist to help tell eMoviePoster.com apart from all other major auctions!
HAS lifetime guarantees on every item - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS unrestored and unenhanced images - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS 100% honest condition descriptions - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS auctions where the winner is the higher of two real bidders - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS "buyers premiums" - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "reserves or starts over $1 - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS hidden bidder IDs - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS no customer service to speak of - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "nosebleed" shipping charges - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS inadequate packaging - NOT eMoviePoster.com

  • I joined at APF a while back to access the restoration category-it lasted a week or two till they deleted me for it posting...rats! ;)

Agree with comments above-while not perfect VMPF lacks the crap that will make me abandon visiting/posting-nasty political discussions, drama, name calling...

Plus-i find the setup of this site very user friendly!

I've forgotten so much over three years, names, reasons for disputes (inc. why VMP broke off from APF) how to use Photoshop. To wit:

I recall I quit APF over a mid-auction revelation, something I'll avoid here along with issues like ownership of mp images.

I definitely regret deleting my OLD Pbucket acct, deleting thousands of pics from APF. Don't even remember why I did it.
  • btw how are NS4 and MPF doing?

  • How are peeps finding this forum? It's #2 on Google:

We deleted you?!?!  For what - I can't recall...
  • NSFGE has much less activity than the other forums. It's like a meeting group of old friends. Some of the members that still post there, like me, have more participation in here because there's more active threads and members.
  • NSFGE reminds me of A Clockwork Orange - if you stay long enough you either make the cut or get beat with a dildo.

    Sounds painful...and a bit odd...

  • Oops I misread...
  • I try to avoid the drama.  I am an active contributor here and in APF.  I mostly lurk in NSFGE.  My late wife was a co-founder of MOPO and I have participated there since forever (1995).

You may not wish to hear this, but they all have their strengths, and they also all have their dramas.  You just had a minor meltdown here that caused a significant drop in activity.

I vigorously protested over at APF during the Rosa incident, both before and after she left.  I got a very passive-aggressive response from Jeff, and a "sure he has his problems, but nobody else is willing to be an active admin" response from Thierry.  The group that left for here, Mel's departure and the fallout over Rosa all hurt the diversity that was APF.  I agree that it is now all Jeff's show, which also hurts.

MPF has been dead for some time.  It was down completely earlier this year.  seems to be back now with only a few posts in the last 2 years.

I think the earlier description of NS4 is accurate.  MOPO is mostly about dealer posts these days, with a smattering of nostalgia.

So, it really is APF or here for discussion.  There is a lot to be said about the discussions here.  The restoration threads are the best around and provide real info.  Bruce still spreads some pearls of wisdom which is much appreciated.  I miss Hondo's game and trivia threads.  And I love the better diversity of this place.  The international presence is refreshing as are posts by Ves and Rosa.

Keep up what you do right and try to avoid the drama that seems to drag all these places down.

  • How are peeps finding this forum? It's #2 on Google:

Not much should be read into the search term "Movie Poster Forum" - it is simply not a high search phrase on Google (so low it's doesn't register), only forum users, ranking counters and OCD sufferers would care. As opposed to

movie posters with over 40,000 global searches per month
    movie posters for sale 2,900
    vintage movie posters 2,400
(daybill movie posters = about 10)

Top 5 actual ranking for the search term: "Movie Poster Forum" (the rank based on the search terms used not the results in Google):

    5. http://www.filmfan.com/

We take out three of five alongside a forum that no one has posted in for more than two years. So given we are ranked highly along side a dead forum probably means there is no need to celebrate I think it would be more likely  people find us on Facebook (and this is born out by the constant flow of random people dropping us a line) and follow the links to here rather than via Google - but its still not huge, because it is a small hobby after all, it's not like lint collecting

Is this right?  Is this how things are over there?  No one else really has any input on that side?  Explains soooooooooo much....

    If you're lucky....

    That's the NS4 spirit! ;)

I will answer any questions, but am never asked any. When someone asks a question, I wait to see if someone else answers, and if no one does, I take a stab at it.

I guess the people here are mostly such veteran collectors that they have nothing to ask about!

Incidentally, I completely agree with Jay that the restoration threads here are great.

  • Where have you been?  Don't make us all feel bad and tell me you have a real life!?!
  •  Really? I would have thought that things with APF might have improved.

In my mind this is a more focused forum, that really enables all to share. i have learnt a lot about daybills and restoration. WONDERFUL!

  • They know the site is back up.  I don't think they are aware you are posting here, and not my place to tell them.
  • I'm sure Jeff the Stalker will share that information

Mel posted this on Tuesday morning:

    Jeff posted this Wednesday morning:

The auction ended on April 8th May 8th...  Coincidence?  I think not.
