Mel from DC...

I got a txt message from Mel today...  His site is back up:  http://www.moviepostercollectors.com/MPC_Home.html  If you haven't checked it out, you should.

Apparently he is totally out of the game, consigning all his posters to Bruce.  Poor guy might have been fighting an illness we didn't know about.  I told him we would welcome him if he wanted to stop by and relive old times...  I wish him the best.  We always think we know each other so well but sometimes never really do...

  • Well that's not good, did he say what was the problem?
  • Nope...
  • Most of us have brain farts in this hobby from time to time, and like all of us, when he didn't he had some good offerings.

Shame about him consigning, he had quite a few I would have liked to own, could have saved himself the selling fees, still I guess he's done with them, a clean cut I suppose.
  • Didn't see eye to eye on a lot with him but you never want anything like that to happen.

Hopefully it is not so serious.   Wishing him well...

Actually one of his aquisitions was the reason I ended up with a The Hour Before Dawn 1SH - you think that was his that sold for a low price recently?
  • Wow! That is one complete site! Think i stumbled upon it once before but didn't know it was run by him. Have heard quite a bit about his extensive collection. Indeed, one's personal struggles are just that....hope he get some good prices for his paper.
  • The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long...

Better to burn out than to fade away...

Please don't let me be misunderstood...

    Or something like that ;)
  • I also wanted to ask - is there any other possible Mel besides "Mel from DC" :-?
  • Yeah I had to go on disability retirement at age 47 -which truly sucks! - but I'm hanging in there.

  • Glad to see the site is up again, helluva a resource and often helped as a public reference in the fight against Loce and his ilk

  • V. Sorry to read this Mel. Hope whatever it is you can recover soon.

  • How doIquote prior replies? I dropped the Loce/fake sellers section. I spentcountless hours in Round 1 fighting with Loce andAdam don't want to deal with it anymore. But you can find it in the Wayback Machine a great site

How do I quote prior replies?

Find the comment/reply press 'quote' (under every comment in this forum), when you do that it will appear in your (new) comment box ready for you to edit and add to.

FYI - to edit any of your own comments press the gear icon to the top right of that comment - you will be given the option Edit or Delete. This is only made available for a few hours to the writer, after that only admin can edit. Any edits are time stamped.

It was indeed a good read, I copied it and posted it in that thread noted above for all to find. We've referenced it a several times to newbies.
  • Just found this photo - still miss D.C.:

  • Oh dear, Charlie just spotted it...

  • Love that giffffff!!!!

You David and Ted rule the gif world ( Ideally I should add now a witty  gif but i know my limits)
  • Well, "Mel from DC" has ditched APF again! Less than zero chance I'll EVER wade into its toxic quicksand again.

And I don't mean this disparagingly, but VMPF is primarily focused on Australia, so I'll only occasionally foray here. BTW I just read today that Australia just surpassed Switzerland as the wealthiest country per capita. Whut?

Anyways if you're on FB I now have 575 followers on my MP hobby page so like it to see my dorky posts. Very few comment, so it's just me yapping.

I also entertain/annoy the four FB groups listed here:

    http://moviepostercollectors.guide/Resources.html

    Here's my FB "pitch":

    *****

+ My 100% nonprofit personal MP Page has 575+ followers, many posts, thousands of XL/HQ MP images. Like/follow www.facebook.com/pg/MoviePosterCollectors to “join the party.” (Click Photos on left, then select All Albums to access MP images.)
+ My 100% nonprofit educational MP site: www.moviepostercollectors.guide = MP Collecting 101: 50+ MP authentications, image showcases, buying guide, etc. (Please refer it to MP newbies)

    See ya round...
  • I rarely visit the APF, what's the quicksand scoop?
  • You know you could stick around and make this place less “Australian”.... it’s funny that 2/3 of the admins now are American and this is still considered an Australian forum (thanks Hondo)...   The forum is only made up of its members.  Give it 6 months and see what happens.

But for how much longer will we have Hondo as the main participant is the question ?
  • That is up to you.  Suck it buttercup! I thought you Aussies were fighters not runners.  Defiant. You know we all love you - if not we would have kicked you out long ago.

I figured we were past this back and forth and family by now.

No, the FB Groups are GINORMOUS now - 15K members - and this forum should focus on Down Under Daybill Devotees to avoid duplicating them.

In fact, YOU should start a DUDD FB Group and require this site's members to DUAL POST there and here. It is VASTLY easier to attract new members on FB, so publicize the new group EVERYWHERE:

Yes, I KNOW you already have a neglected FB Thingy but Group is vastly superior...
  • Poppycock.

Social media is an instance gratification not the multi level conversation pit that a forum is.

ON FB there are no categories, no sub categories, when a new post is started and it's at the top, only until someone else posts a new topic (or bumps the old one). On a forum, here and on any other 'board' type forum there are multiple conversations going on at any one time that can be scanned/viewed on a single browser web page.

The reason there is an apparent leaning toward Australia paper is because Lawrence posts regularly about it and people engage with that, nothing to stop others who are also regular members from starting up a conversation. Bruce is starting to feed in great information which people are gobbling up, Bruce has also a signature to his website which gives him the double benefit - the more he posts the more his own website is 'promoted'.

Any post by anyone here can be shared to any FB page, just click the button at the bottom right (of the post), no double posting required.

There is already a FB daybillers group. There is also a group for pre-code, one for classic movies, one for Thai posters, one for posters with holes in the corners and so on and so on. My own FB page has (I had to check), over 3.5K followers, it gets new members almost daily I haven't posted there for about a year. Most people join a FB group rarely post, just like most any other forum.

As you often post on FB asking people to follow you then I suggest what you do is build a better website (build it around WP) then ask the guys here if you can embed this forum into your website, then you will have the best of both worlds - a website that has a forum. In fact this forum can be embedded on most PHP run websites. What a great way to promote your own website whilst allowing visitors to consumer the movie poster conversations.

1% of members participate the rest consume. Which one are you?

I am happy to contribute to specific topics if I feel I have additional info many of the members may not know already.

On the promotion aspect, I would be astounded if EVERYONE who posts here doesn't know about my auctions. I just set the signature up because the unknown person who created this forum (that would be YOU, David) did such a great job of it that it is quick and easy and looks professional. But if you ever banned it (for me or for everyone) it would not have the slightest effect on my posting.

I have the greatest interest of anyone to see the hobby grow and thrive, and I will gladly post on ANY troll-free forum or Facebook group without any "benefit", beyond helping grow the hobby, by helping make new collectors feel welcome.

Here is a handy checklist to help tell eMoviePoster.com apart from all other major auctions!
HAS lifetime guarantees on every item - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS unrestored and unenhanced images - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS 100% honest condition descriptions - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS auctions where the winner is the higher of two real bidders - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS "buyers premiums" - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "reserves or starts over $1 - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS hidden bidder IDs - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS no customer service to speak of - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "nosebleed" shipping charges - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS inadequate packaging - NOT eMoviePoster.com
