  • UPDATING When The Kellys Rode ( 1934 ) Australian film posters.

     a  b  c

    a) First release rare 1934 printed daybill. Possibly the only sighted copy.

    b) Second designed 1934 first release daybill  Banned in N.S.W, only, so the daybill was never distributed there. This is an extremely rare poster and the only copy that I have ever sighted. The poster is courtesy of the Powerhouse Museum.

    c) A re-release Australia wide 1948 printed daybill adapted from one of the original 1934 poster designs. In actual fact this poster was a N.S.W. first release poster there, as the film was originally banned in this state in 1934. This poster has been seen in the marketplace a number of times in the past, but not so these days.

Some discussions regarding this film were previously featured on this thread in November 2016 and November 2021. If one would care to check these out some other images and information can be found there.
  • Original second design is stunning..  I think I recall seeing that original long somewhere...its glued to a board or something along those lines?
  • I have the one on the right but would love the others
  • Nice posters. The one on the right was my very first daybill. I still have it after 30 years.
  • Another Kelly Gang content film coming up as the next attraction
  • Thanks Lawrence.

I had a question for the group. I noticed Dad and Dave movies have not been shown in TV for a while and I haven't seen them for sale on DVD; I know there was one person selling them on DVD - but they had copied it off TV.

Do we know who owns the copyright to the Dad and Dave movies, and why haven't they produced them on DVD? Thanks in Advance.

Supposedly this company owns copyright in the films, there are contact details here you may want to pursue. https://www.cinesoundmovietone.com.au/

    Info came from here.

  • Many thanks for the details. Interesting to see they have the copyright of many old Australian films. I'll follow up the contact to find their plans. Hopefully we can see these old films becoming available.
  • As mentioned above by Peter in his posting, Cinesound-Movietone Productions Pty. Limited currently hold the rights to all the Ken. G .Hall films including the Dad And Dave titles.

Why the NFSA hasn't released the films on DVD is unknown to me.

My memory of a television screening that took place many decades ago of Dad And Dave Come To Town is that the the print screened of Dad And Dave Come To Town was only of well worn quality.

I had screened a 16mm print of this film at the film society I was involved in that was obtained from The National Library Of Australia in that period of time. The print was in pristine condition so the copies being held currently by the NFSA should be in good condition one would think.

Another film I obtained for screening from The National Library of Australia for the film society, and also in excellent condition was the Ealing film The Siege of Pinchgut.

  • Many thanks Lawrence. It would be great if we can get the "Ken G. Hall" films released on DVD. I also taped a Dad And Dave movie (Dad Rudd MP) back in the 80s off the TV.  It added to my interested in collecting Australian film posters. I haven't seen the film The Siege of Pinchgut. I love the poster.
  • I had a good conversation with Glenn at Cinesound Movietone Productions. Glenn said there was no plans to digitally distribute the films they have (eg. Dad and Dave). The films are held and preserved at the National Film Archives. Glenn said it's costly to distribute them electronically - and difficult to make it commercially viable.

Also, the copyright of Smithy is not held with Cinesound Movietone Productions. Glenn mentioned a company name who owned the copyright - but has gone out of business.
  • Disappointing then for you.

Your posting prompted me to call the NFSA in Canberra. On inquiring I was told that the Charles Chauvel film titles including Jedda and The Rats Of Tobruk are no longer available to obtain from them to purchase.

Regarding Smithy, it is still currently available from the NFSA, but no longer in DVD format They have stopped issuing all their commercially for sale film titles on DVD. Everything commercially sold now at the NFSA is forwarded on a MP4 digital file download.
  • Thanks  Lawrence. Yes somewhat disappointing. The good aspect is that the Cinesound Movietone Productions films are preserved at the NFSA, but are not generally available - without a formal loan requests to NFSA.

I'm very grateful Ric Chauvel Carlsson managed to distribute the Chauvel films.

Yes Ric did a great job in having the majority his grandfather's films available on DVD in the past.

     The Glenrowan Affair ( 1951).

  • This is an update on a brief mention I had previously included in the Missing Daybills thread in July 2015,

An important film in Australian film history considering the subject matter. The Glenrowan Affair was released in Australia by the major film distributor BEF in 1951, if only obtaining a limited release. By all reports not a well made movie. but it is about Ned Kelly and the Kelly gang and is  therefor part of our history and folk law.

     (Adverising trade material).

The following three Australian lobby cards happen to be the only poster material from the film that I managed to locate. I am sorry about the quality of the following three images but it's the best that is available

Where is the daybill, one sheet poster or the press sheet that would have been printed for the Australian release? Maybe one day some poster material will turn up.
  • You would think there would be a few survivors from '51.
  • Yeah odd that nothing has surfaced for a film in the 50s...but then, we only recently saw all those daybills for Shadow of the Boomerang so there is hope I guess
  • I'm sure they will surface one day. These posts prompt people to start thinking if they have anything buried in their boxes and file cabinets. It has made me think that I have a couple of stills of a Australian silent film buried somewhere - which I will have to dig out

  • The missing Australian poster versions of The Glenrowan Affair has reminded me of the still missing original Australian daybill and one sheet of Bitter Springs from 1950.

The following commonly sighted daybill is a second printing by F, Cunninghame and is usually incorrectly referred to as being the first release poster. The actual missing first released daybill was designed by poster artist Aub Mosely at W.E.Smith printers. I cannot wait hopefully to sight it one day

  • Many thanks for showing the posters... Wish I had the Australian day bill...

  • Here is a UK press sheet I purchased in the UK back in the 90s. Shows some UK versions

My pleasure. It is indeed a lovely original daybill poster.

Great images, and thanks for sharing. I particularly like the six sheet poster showing the two divers.

What appears to be a full set of 8 lobby cards.

The following are five colorised lobby card designs. Some of these cards are the same designs as the eight above images and some aren't.
