24 sheet Poster in 6 pieces

Hi all...I am interested to get the members view on the value of 24 sheet posters. Obviously the immediate problem of selling such a size is finding a buyer that can deal with the size. Those that might be interested will just store it away as very few will be able to display it. What success have members in this group had in selling 24 sheet size posters or seen others had? In terms of $$ reached, it is determined by the title but i think the shear size may play a role - positive or negative?

  • My only contribution is to, if you already haven't done so, check out Bruce's Emovieposter.com website for the twenty-four sheet  poster results from his past auctions.
  • further to my original post, I forgot to mention I had spoken to Bruce and he feels this size can be 'iffy' which is what i thought. Looking at his website it would appear from the ones that have sold only the Star Wars original trilogy command thousands of dollars. The rest are in the US$hundreds.
  • There are actually on Bruce's website, apart from the six Star Wars posters, sixteen other posters that were originally released between 1927 and 1972 that sold from between $1,035 and $18,700.
  • May I ask if you have a 24 sheet poster what is it's title?
  • I'm curious of the title too!

  • I've never had one and probably wouldn't want one because it's impossible to display or even look at.
  • A problem with a 24sh is that to properly display it, you kind of need to destroy it.  What I mean is you need to permanently mount it and the easiest way by far is to paste it onto a wall.  I have seen several 24sh posters mounted this way.  In each case it was at a commercial establishment, i.e. a bar/restaurant.  If the establishment goes belly up or is remodeled, the poster is ripped off and destroyed.

A wonderful example of presenting a 24 sheet poster with The Dawn Patrol from 1938.

You can search it out further by checking the forum's the Post Your Best Of 1921 thread, that was originally posted here by Oakie in Januarty 1922.

Of course I had meant to have said January 2022 and not 1922. I shouldn't stay up so late.

I enjoyed your amusing comment though Jay,
  • The 24 sheet that is going up for Auction at Heritage's Signature Auction is an Advance release for the movie Alien. As mentioned in my original post i acknowledge the difficulty in selling these size items due to their size.  But if there is a time to sell anything related to Alien I believe it is now due to the success of the Romulus film which has enhanced the interest in the franchise once again. In terms of the $ outcome i am going into this eyes wide open, whatever will be will be. Just happy to get it out the door. Auctions are always dicey, sometimes you win big ( even when you shouldn't) and other times not.

  • IMO this poster does not do justice to the format.  If I wanted to cover a wall I would find something with full graphics.
    But.. to each his own.
  •

Interesting that no 24 sheet poster in advance or normal format availability appears on the U.S.A. press book.

I totally agree. The poster as you mentioned doesn't do justice to the format at all.

The usage of the light blue background was a mistake. A much darker colour similar to what was used on Fox's Return Of The Jedi would have surely enhanced the look of the poster.

  • Any confirmed date set from Heritage Auctions for you Alien 24 sheet poster?
  • Hi Lawrence, yes December 2/3rd. What ever will be will be. you can view it now.
  • I have just viewed it on HA, The estimate of $2,500 - $5,000 is indeed interesting. Good luck with it.

Sometimes that means the reserve is the low estimate. Best of luck indeed!

  • Almost there.
  • Update for those that might be interested to know. The Alien 24 sheet sold at Heritage today for just under AU$1700.00 after BP. Only one bid but that one person has a one of a kind Alien item.

I think that is a more than fair result Ben.

That is the beauty of high reserves and absurd estimates. The poster sells for well over retail because they found a single person who was willing to pay a very high price, and yet, because of the crazy estimate, he likely thinks he got a "bargain". I just don't feel it is an auction when a fair percentage of items sell to a single bidder, and a fair amount of others either don't sell, or are bought by the consignor.

  • It would be interesting to see what you actually end up with after taking into account buyers premium, sellers premium, additional fees, postage, etc.
  • John, any experienced seller of many years understands the concept that if you sell on another platform there will be fees involved. The fees involved in this instance were researched, understood and applied to all pricing situations prior to embarking on the exercise. This same due diligence was applied to other options that were available to me and the risks that were in play. As mentioned I was happy with the outcome as the seller and the customer has a very unique piece that i can't think too many people would have.

Hi Bruce, not sure what you mean by the Alien 24 sheet was well over retail? When something has a retail price applied that is suggesting there have been plenty of them around and you can easily put a price on it or in the true sense of the word it is mass produced on a production line and it is still in production. Both of these cases cannot be applied to the Alien 24 sheet. There were no records of one of these being sold anywhere previously but of course if there were please supply one to me, i could be wrong. With this knowledge, an everyday retail price cannot be applied due to its exceptional scarcity.

On the topic of the customer,'They' did not 'find' a person to pay the amount at the reserve but rather the bidder was happy to pay the amount shown on offer, No one twisted their arm. Just like you 'found' someone to pay US$250.00 for a Hannah And Her Sisters daybill ( the most recent one in the same condition sold for US$ 9.00) , great day for the vendor ($250.00) and the customer obviously was willing to pay that amount, No one twisted their arm but the customer was happy to pay that amount. At the end of the day, if you run auctions involving reserves for selling most items in life or you sell posters with a reserve of 1.00, in an auction setting , I believe it is about the potential vendor and customer making their own informed decisions before committing to sell or buy with the best available knowledge at hand.

Of course there are fees with every auction house and I think it was a good outcome for you. I was simply curious about what the net amount will be.
