  • Calcium Hydroxide
  • Looks nice Matt! Have you tried a first wash with Orvus? How are you soaking the paper in he Cal Hydrox---Spray on? Or a complete immersion bath in a tray? How long are you letting the poster soak either way with the Cal Hydrox?

That bottom right stain on the Marilyn might need the bleach-looks like a tough one. The tough stains I had were on the one lobby which seemed to have a "grease" like element to them-they wouldn't deacid or bleach out.

Btw-are you blotter-drying them? They look nice & flat after a washing! :)
  • Don't have Orvus. I immerse them for 30+ minutes. I even tried a bath with Isopropanol added.
  • Isopropanol is 99% alcohol (not for David use) I use it at work to clean fibre optic cores before splicing them to pig tails......get with the programme Dave!
  • The alcohol should be sprayed on first (diluted w/water) - let it sit for a few minutes.  Then into the CaOH bath...

Yep, I'll give that a go today.
  • The other thing about the first Toko-Ri wash is that the water stank of what only can be described as cat piss.
  • That means it's working and you need to make sure and wash the poster with flowing water after you bath it...
  • Or the cat could just be claiming his territory?
  • Thanks Charlie!

  • Thanks Charlie!

  • Not much luck with the latest wash. Just a bit more dirt came out.

  • Tried combining HCl and H2O?
  • ;) I figure I want to keep the poster intact thanks professor.

  • ahh...righto, good to know.

My calcium hydrochlorite arrived today. So I spot bleached the poster. Pretty pleased with the outcome and learnt a few things on the way. Probably used to much in the blue area up top left. The poor poster ahs been washed a few times now. A few more tears and tiny holes but I'm extremely happy nonetheless.

    First old photo

  • Nice one Matt, gotta be happy with that!
  • Sweetaz
  • Hey! That's the ticket, Matt! That looks great! So much brighter, and virtually no stains! :plus_one:

How are you drying them? If here not getting mounted? A press between glass & time dry?
  • Thanks guys!

I dry it right where it is. On carpet tiles that are very flat. Turn on my ceiling fan to low. That way there is air virtually around the whole poster and it dries very evenly.

  • Oh what a difference!  Very nice!
  • Way to go Matt!
  • basic article on paper and deacidification. related mostly to book paper, but basics still apply.

  • Had to do some extra spot bleaching to get the two heavy stains above and below "Robot"

  • Damn! That's good work, Matt! Get a frame with canvas on it and back it! Very nice removal of stains. :plus_one:
  • Fark Matt thats fantastic! Doesn't need backing..am liking the clean and press..so you basically washed it and rollled onto hollytex to dry..details gurrlllllfrannddd!
  • Thanks fellas.

@Sven Dried it on my carpet tiles with the ceiling fan on low.
