New York Times: Anatomies of Scenes (with commentary by directors)

Comments

  • Watched the Dunkirk one, not overly fond of commentaries - I want to watch the movie not analyse it.
  • Think I watched the entire commentary to Airplane, which was a blast, so comedy commentary better.
  • I tried to watch a couple of others...just find it, over-analysed?
  • Depends.  I only watch the commentary when I really love the film.  You find wonderful tidbits that way.

For example, listening to the commentary for Singin in the Rain, I learned that Jean Hagen dubbed Debbie Reynolds voice in the scene where Kathy Selden (Debbie) is dubbing Lina Lamont's (Hagen) voice.  I find that priceless and well worth listening just for that bit.
