THRILLS AND CHILLS selection of four images to have a think about, and then hopefully answers will flow in.

Anyone? I hadn't though this batch would be difficult to recognise the actresses with at least three out of the four, then to work out the films.

  • Clue for 0000 is she was once known as a queen.

Clue for PPPP is she was long time married to a big Hollywood star.

Clue for  QQQQ is she had a long association with an eagle.

Clue for RRRR is that she acted in a high number of western movies.
  • PPPP is Frances Dee. For a long time I thought of Joel McCrea (her husband of 57 years, until his passing) as "the poor man's Gary Cooper", but then I saw his great 1940s movies, and saw him as indeed "a big Hollywood star"!

Both stars walked away from Hollywood, and apparently never regretted it,

Yes RRRR is Joan Weldon. The film scene is from Them! ( 1954 ), as seen below with James Arness.

Joan Weldon at her brief time at Warner Brothers appeared in The Command ( 1954 ) the first western film released in Cinemascopra, and among other roles Riding Shotgun ( 1954 ) with Randolph Scott.

Unfortunately QQQQ isn;t Lina Romay, but thanks for having a go Bruce.

Does this image of the actress perhaps help to identify her?

I will leave this one open for another 24 hours or so, then if still unanswered I will reveal the identity of this actress.
  • My final try. Adele Mara

Spot on and thanks for persevering with solving this one Bruce. Good work. The dancing scene I used was from The Vampir'e Ghost ( 1945 ).

( Adele Mara seen here with John Abbott. )

Thoroughbreds ( 1944 ). Adele appears with veteran actor Tom London in a scene from the film.

A couple of glamourus publicity photographs from Republic Pictures, where she was signed and then worked for them exclusively between 1944 and 1951, appearing in forty two Republic films. The image on the right was taken to publicise The Tiger Woman ( 1945 ).

Correct. Joanna Pettet in Casino Royale ( 1967 ). Yes it certainly wasn't a big career in film and on television, but nevertheless a lengthy one that lasted twenty six years, from between 1964 and 1990. She is still with us at the age of seventy nine,

Correct. You have answered the image that I had though would have been the hardest actress in this batch to identify, so well done. It is indeed the magnificent Eileen Atkins, with the title actually being The Devil Within Her. The film had the alternative original title of I Don't Want To Be Born ( 1975 ) as seen below.

  • TTTT is Winona Ryder
