Jane Russell's Underwater! - Behind The Scenes With The Various Advertising & Poster Designs.

The following two pages were published in an edition of Life Magazine in 1955.

I couldn't find out the answer.

The advertising version of Underwater! that was displayed outside the Mayfair Theatre in Times Square New York in 1955.

Australian daybill and the Australian one sheet. The daybill design is similar to the New York Mayfair Theatre design,

Australian 3 sheet.

Australia certainly produced some variety in the artwork designs.

From the original 1955 U.S. campaign book.

I am a great Jane Russell fan and have been working for some time in compiling this. I hope you find it interesting and enjoy Jane's Underwater! posters.

  • Love the 3 sheet art.  Her red suit is a real standout.
  • She’s wearing a red suit? Oh yes, I suppose she is! My attention must’ve been elsewhere. Thanks for pointing that out. ;)
Really great stuff! Thanks for posting. Boy, I could look through a whole book of photos of Mayfair Theater movie advertising displays, if such a thing existed. Wow!
  • I don't think I have seen the 3 sheet before - very nice
  • If anyone knows where I can get my hands on a 3 sheet, let me know. Been after one for a while now.
  • The three sheet is gorgeous! I love the daybill and three sheet  it's the ultimate vintage scuba poster and with Jane Russell looking sexy as ever you can' go wrong.

The three sheet would be stunning on the wall Matt!

Underwater! publicity material printed with an alternative title of ''The Big Rainbow''.

  • Jayne Mansfield during the Underwater! publicity junket in January 1955.

At the World premiere of Underwater! at Silver Springs Florida in January 1955, an unknown Jayne Mansfield was brought to Silver Springs for the publicity junket. Jayne during the premiere lost her bikini top in a wardrobe malfunction. She was then signed up by Warner Brothers and by the next year she had starred in probably her most well known film The Girl Can't Help It.

  • Another image of Jayne Mansfield taken with one of the stars of Underwater! Richard Egan, during the course of the publicity junket in 1955.
  • Great thread!  B)

Randomly put these together - UP in the air, DOWN in the water!

  • Snared this at a local auction the other week, framed poorly and obviously has its faults (likely glued down, trimmed not folded under etc.) but to scared to open her up.

Destined for the spare toilet wall.
  • Never mind.  She's still stunning. (and you just never know...you might have gotten lucky)

You never know Ves, although I think my luck came through later in the day  ;)

I thought NZ had a teacher crisis?  =)

  • Bruce has just sold a copy for $ 206, so who's the lucky boy then?  In this case 13 is very good.

Ha! I noticed Lawrence. A pity it wasn't a stash of the Goofy's, Star Wars or the new leader The Good, The Bad & The Ugly!!

  • Now don't be greedy.

I can't understand the interest in this poorly produced daybill. Can someone explain ?

    Clint.  That's why :)
  •  Yes Clint at any price.
  • To be fair, of the trilogy it is by far the hardest poster to source.
The other two seem to come up quite often but not this one...

This is why...and at least for me it is the best film of the trilogy too
  • First one is pretty great... "Get three coffins ready...My mistake, 4"
  • First one is pretty great... "Get three coffins ready...My mistake, 4"
Who are we kidding Ves - all three are fantastic

Agree Ves, although I've never laughed at a mule since!

  • Getting back to the subject of this thread Jane Russell, I thought a repeat of an image from a posting I made in July 2015 on the ''24 Sheet Billboard Posters'' thread would be in order. From Bruce's personal collection of pressbooks this beautiful poster had a special offer to exhibitors, that you can read above on the poster. The poster would have looked spectacular displayed on a billboard and hopefully no vehicles, who's male driver's looked at it a little too long, ended up involved in an accident.

Stunning Billboard image to get us back on track Lawrence. I'm still keeping an eagle eye out for an Aussie 3 Sheet!

  • Of interest is that the television rights to the film Underwater! here in in Australia are still held in perpetuity by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation ( ABC ), Australia's national broadcaster, which is funded by the Australian Government. The film has been shown continually , normally in the early hours of the morning, from around the 1960's I believe, and the print that they still use, not often these days, was sourced from the original C & C Television Corp. Movietone U.S.A. package and it is in the form of a jumpy, scratched and well worn soft focus 16mm print that is shown in a black and white version of the original Technicolor film. The film isn't a good film to start with in colour but to see it in black and white in this atrocious condition, without colour, makes it unwatchable. I was sent a DVD-R of Underwater! in colour and excellent condition many years ago and it is worth a viewing just to see Jane Russell.

  • I wonder if RKO will still honour the free 24 sheet giveaway if I send pics of the wall I intend on displaying it on?  Hmmmm...

  •

Jayne Mansfield  and Jane Russell, along with some beauties, promoting the World premiere of Underwater! at Silver Springs Florida U.S.A. in January 1955.

Japanese movie programme cover. Simple but very effective and most certainly eye catching.
