Resto advice needed
in Restoration
This daybill was previously framed and had the top border glued down to masonite. Having removed it with some un-du and a blade, I now find the glue is still tacky. The paper is also very brittle and chips easily.
Not super high value, but there aren't many copies around and I would like to preserve it as best I can for the new owner.
Should I use archival tape on the top to reinforce and cover the glue?
I realise backing is the answer, but that's not in my budget.
Thanks in advance.

Can you soften the glue residue with UnDu and gently scrape? Will this pull off the fragile border? Or soften/soak with UnDu and use a makeup “pad†to wipe away?
Also-if your long range goal is to eventually back, i would think adding tape on top of the glue would create more rips along the border when it’s eventually removed.
This is a poster I will be selling and need to ship (hence prob with tackiness of glue).
The paper is so brittle it chips away in flakes and I'm scared to scrape.
I find UnDu softens glue, but doesn't dissolve it.
The new owner (who I really really hope is someone in particular!) can then send it off for proper restoration.
A keen-eyed VMPF member has now claimed it for their collection.
I didn't want to use tape and cause further problems down the track.
Anyway, I'm glad it's off to a good home!
Thanks again,
Mark
