Hypothetical Collection Reduction Advice

So I would like opinions/methods/thoughts on the following:

Let's say you had a 2019 goal to reduce your 3,000 to 5,000 poster (because you stopped counting 3 years ago) collection by half.  What would be your plan to accomplish this?

  • Is this a trick question? ;)

    Best,
    dario.
  • I had to read it twice. To reduce your ( 3000 to 5000 ) collection by half.
  • Enter Bruce....
  • Begin by choosing the first 100 you’d take to a desert island or another planet to represent not only your favorites but those that you feel represent a variety of genre’s, decades, stars, countries & sizes. Then build off that list of 100 to cut your 3,000-5,000 down to size.

Last idea-I’m familiar with 1930s paper-so i could handle that decade for you.... :)
  • Go through each poster and ask yourself, will I ever hang this poster on the wall? Have 3 piles, yes, no and maybe.
Then send the no pile to Bruce.
  • Start with sizes that you least prefer - eg. Japanese B2s or 3 sheets - and move them on first. Bulk reduction feels like the best plan. Although you'll have heaps of posters that you think are worth X dollars each, the reality of trying to sell several thousand posters one at a time would possibly drive you insane! So I think someone like Bruce would be your best plan once you've decided which posters are in the bottom half of your collection.

Be clear on your collecting goals then reduce based on this

Take the crtical mass first e.g. anything to do with Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn. Are you happy to keep all formats and sizes? If not prioritize. You can do this based on what matt or pancho. Do you want to keep just your favorites and dont care of size and country of origin or do you want hard and fast rules eg. Only one sheets and lobbys. Dont beat yourself up if you want to keep a few of your favourite stills.

Once your sort the critical mass you will identify certain patterns of what you like and dont like which helps to sort through the non critical mass.

Go from the very bottom up. Do the bottom 10% first, then, if you don't miss those items (and I feel sure you won't) then go on to the next 10%. If you ever miss any of it, stop. But I predict you will get through 50% with no trouble, and you will get those items into the hands of people who may well enjoy them far more than you ever did.

If you do the above and have the time, put the bottom 10% on eBay at fixed prices. That's likely the only way to yield very much from it. That's the one downside to selling from the bottom up. All too often, one man's unwanted stuff is everyone's unwanted stuff.

Here is a handy checklist to help tell eMoviePoster.com apart from all other major auctions!
HAS lifetime guarantees on every item - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS unrestored and unenhanced images - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS 100% honest condition descriptions - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS auctions where the winner is the higher of two real bidders - IS eMoviePoster.com
HAS "buyers premiums" - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "reserves or starts over $1 - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS hidden bidder IDs - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS no customer service to speak of - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS "nosebleed" shipping charges - NOT eMoviePoster.com
HAS inadequate packaging - NOT eMoviePoster.com

  • Fire will do. :)

Send the stuff you are holding for other people, and you'll have around 1000 less...  :D

But that is the good stuff.  ;) (I think that was a hint - guess I know what I need to do this weekend.)
  • Actually it wasn't. Still have to get the funds to get that package shipped. And that bastard is not gonna be light...
  • So, grab a beer and enjoy the weekend :)

That's just what I did recently, so far I've sent three boxes to him and they're turning up in auctions every week. I really have a handful I'd like to keep and frame so I can see them.
