Bitter Springs 1950 Australian daybill

Copies of the above Bitter Springs (1950) Australian daybill designed poster version appear regularly, and have done so for many decades in the marketplace in large numbers, It is constantly credited as being an original first release poster though when in fact it is a later 1950's second printing.

Before I comment any further, any comments with your thoughts on the poster would be appreciated.

  • I don't recall seeing any other version.
  • I'm the same. I have not seen any other versions.
  • Thank you both  Rick and Andrew for your comments.

Firstly there was an original Australian daybill printed in 1950 by W.E. Smith featuring the artwork of poster artist Aub Mosely and this information is  confirmed in a newspaper article from the early 1950s.. This daybill would have had an Eagle Lion credit as well as BEF appearing on the poster as seen below on the newspaper adverting blocks images.

    ( Trove)

Three BEF Australian daybill images follow below from around the same period of time showing the Released in Australia by Eagle Lion. Distributed by B.E.F. credit printed on the posters.

On saying all this the following daybill is missing an Eagle Lion credit, and has a different printer F. Cunninghame appearing on it. This poster is a second printing from sometime later on in the 1950s.

The missing Bitter Springs original W.E,Smith daybill is only one of countless missing daybills that one would hope will surface and be sighted one day in the future.
  • I thought we had discussed this before but the only reference I could find was in the Artist for WE Smith posters thread, where there is mention that a likely original db would have been designed by Aub Moseley

It was discussed in various threads here on the forum in the past but with only limited information included there..
  • The British quad is really superb, which is actually the country of origin poster.
  • Partial to the UK 3 sheet myself, though you are right the sylised look of the quad is a stunner

  • A different poster image enlarged to further emphasize how wonderful this poster is. It certainly would be great to view it in person.

  • More examples of great UK posters

There were recently nine copies of this daybill version that I had located that were currently up for sale on the internet that were being advertised by various sellers. Mutiple copies of six from one seller.
