Does anyone have any images they can post (or message to me) from the very first release Gone With The Wind Australian posters (the ones with art and the picture frame design)?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Above is an image of an original U.S.A. 1939 first release one sheet film poster. Following it is an original Australian first release 1940 one sheet poster. This poster was used in 1944 at some Australian film screenings. The year 1944 has been confirmed by checking a calendar of that year which proved these added dates to be correct.

Some major films such as Gone With The Wind were firstly screened in capitol and large cities on an initial roadshow selected basis. Later on a nationwide Australian wide release would take place, Continual screenings of the film would extend throughout the 1940's and into the 1950's.

The above included Australian one sheet appears to be first release, or an early second printing . No official re-release appears to have occurred

An Australian original press sheet shows the 3 sheet poster also having the same design.

    (NFSA)
As seen above with this example the film was continually revived by cinema owners

  • Thanks very much, Lawrence. So the posters with the picture frame design did not have a rating? I ask because I was consigned a 3-sheet, and I was surprised to see no rating, but seeing your pressbook image confirms this IS how it was.

Sorry Bruce but I will point out that Australian press sheets from that period occasionally didn't show any censorship ratings on the displayed poster images An example follows below of Passport To Fame (aka The Whole Town's Talking from 1935.

The Australian daybill not sighted on the press sheet had a censorship rating appearing on it.

I am curious to know if your 3 sheet poster has a printer's credit printed on it or not?
  • Sorry for the delay in answering, but I am insanely busy.

The 3-sheet was missing its bottom section, and the person who had it restored used the pressbook image as a guide, so there is no rating on the bottom.

I will of course disclose all the above. One could have another restorer add a rating area, if they wanted.

Bruce, the one that you will be auctioning is quite strange. The image of Gable and Leigh is different to the image in the pressbook albeit it looks to me as if the printers mistakenly switched the images of the one sheet and the three sheet in the pressbook so that just confuses things even more. The Australian Press Book (which I have) does not mention that there were two different styles of three sheet. Are you sure it is actually Australian?
  • i can only see the Aussie daybill image.
  • How much of the bottom of the poster that was missing and replaced would have a big bearing on the authenticity of the poster's presentation.

An image of the original shape and condition of the poster would help me a great deal with helping to determine the original placement details, and to what the missing section would have looked like.

Is it possible Bruce  to ask and convince the poster's consigner to send you an image of the pre restoration poster image?

My above comments were compiled before John's comments were added here,

Now for some post John remarks thoughts.

John's thinking on the possible switching of the two images credits had also crossed my mind.

Appreciate some confirmation that the press book is Australian and not American.

I would really like to see the current image of the upcoming poster to be auctioned. This may assist greatly.

  • Bruce did load the image but it appears that it is not showing up for everyone so here it is ... completely different image to the press book

  • thanks John.
  •

Bruce's image and the Australian pressbook image incorrectly labeled as being a one sheet instead of a  3 sheet image,

As It would have been extremely doubtful that there would have been two Australian 3 sheets printed, surely the poster in question appears then to be of U.S.A. origin which would explain the missing Australian censorship rating.

A question to John. Is there an image, or even just a mention of the existence of an Australia daybill appearing on the press sheet?

There is a reference to the daybill but no image is shown
  • Nothing to contribute, but finding this all very interesting!
  • Based on all you very helpful people contributed, I am now going to simply list it as a "three-sheet". I will say that it does not match the image of any known U.S. or Australian three-sheet, and I can see a possibility it is an English "six-sheet", but I can't locate an image of that.

I am sure it is an incomplete first release poster, and I will hope someone comes forward with more information!

    Thanks so much.

It's an interesting one. The image of Clark Gable is not good!
  • I finally got hold of the consignor (he was traveling) and I think I solved the mystery with his help.

He bought it many years ago in a Sotheby's auction in England in a lot of incomplete and poor condition posters. Everything else was English, and from 1939 or 1940 (likely found under a floor or in a wall).

So with that I would bet anything it is an English 3-sheet, but of course until a first release English pressbook turns up, we can't say for sure.
