Australian Censors Hated Hammer Horror Films In The 1950s & 1960s.

edited April 2015 in Attack of the Censor

Australia was probably the most deprived country in the world in being able to view Hammer horror films in the late 1950s through to the early 1970s.Most were banned outright or passed with heavy cuts. Even New Zealand, with their censorship track record, had at the time of  their original  release  four titles released there that were  banned in Australia

I feel inclined to supply details on this shameful period in Australian film history when time permits. As it would be very time consuming to do this exercise I would like to hear from members if this is the type of information they would like to know about.

  • I've sent a cooee to Ari...
  • As no interest shown in this subject I have withdrawn my intention to post on it. There would be so little gain that it would not be worth the effort.. Pity as very little has been written on this subject, if anything at all, and if so  not as detailed as what I intended to write on the individual films bannings and in most cases the eventual first releases in Australia plus some very detailed information on the four films banned in Australia but released  in New Zealand.

I sincerely doubt there was no interest, in fact I think I speak for all if not most of those in this forum who are collectors of Australian material that is is an automatic yes to information sharing if and when you are happy to share it. Before you joined this was the way, anyone who had information in (say) Dating the Daybill section would just post it, without the need to ask if it was wanted, others would then join in if and when they had something to add or question.

The reason why the Australian section is there is because we all want to lean and share what we know so the hobby is better informed as a result.

    So bring it on.

A lot of us aren't posting anything simply because we don't know much about the subject but are keen to find out more.

Phil Edwards would be the man to speak to.

  • Yes please share - as Matt said don't take our silence for disinterest
  • I have only a few Daybills, they aren't really my thing, but I would still like to read what you have on this subject as the history is fascinating.

So to echo what David, Matt, and Chris have said, please post away...
    :)
