It isn't the Australian poster artists fault as the image has been copied very similar to the below U.S. one sheet image.

        A clue in Humpty Dumpty.

  • The Walls Came Tumbling Down (1946) - Marguerite Chapman

  •                                                                          Janet Blair                                                                                                                                                                                    Correct. It is Marguerite Chapman in the 1946 film The Walls Came Tumbling Down.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Bruce had first of all thought it was possibly Janet Blair and  I thought there was a good likeness as well so here is Janet Blair. Any agree there is some likeness to the daybill image and more so than the actual black & white Marguerite Chapman photograph is ?
  • Yeah I can see it...a little bit :)
  • I can see the likeness, but I would have still rather have dated the one that looks like the one in the picture than the one that looks like the one in the daybill.
  •                                                                                     At home in British films. Another non American to identify.

  • Joan Greenwood?
  • Not Joan Greenwood. I always loved her husky voice.

    Dear Murderer (1947) - Daybill

  • Correct. Greta Gynt was born in Norway. If you get a chance have a look at the British thriller she also starred in from 1947 Take My Life. British noir at its best.
  •                                                                                 Another beauty. At least in real life.
  • Played an Australian in a 1955 film release. A Warner Brothers star in the 1940s This image taken from a 1960s film release. Will probably be remembered mostly for her role in a 1960s musical role.
  • I got nothing

Unless I am having the mother of all brainlocks, then one of the above clues is wrong!

    Which one ?
I mean I have wracked my brain over 1940s Warner Bros actresses who would be " remembered mostly for her role in a 1960s musical role" and the two seem mutually exclusive!

  • I need to stop Bruce wracking his brain.

The actress is Eleanor Parker and the film the image is from is the 1961 20th Century Fox release Madison Avenue.

Eleanor played the Australian born opera singer Marjorie Lawrence in Interrupted Melody ( 1955 ).

Starred in Warner Brothers films from the mid 1940s through to 1950.

She will be remembered mainly for playing the baroness in The Sound Of Music ( 1965 ) although she played some great roles at Warner Brothers including Caged, I loved her in The Naked Jungle.

  • Thanks Lawrence! But I doubt that anyone who does not remember her for anyone else would "remember" her for The Sound of Music. That is why I never considered that movie in thinking of great 1960s musicals. And I never saw Interrupted Melody.

But your clues were fair. I liked her best in Detective Story. She never did become a top star, and I am not sure why.

  • For a lot of recent generations The Sound Of Music is most likely the only film they have seen Eleanor Parker appear in. It is one of the all time successful movie musicals and in Australia is screened regularly on either free to air or subscription television. I know a lot of people who seem to love it and view it often so if one views a moive over and over they most likely know who she is.
  •                                                                                                                                                                                               English actress.

    Correct.
  •                                                                                                                                                                                    Who is this and the film it is from ?
  • Joan Bennett - The Secret Beyond the Door (1948)

  • Correct. Joan Bennett seems to have become a regular along with Danny Kaye on the forum..

    I know who I prefer...

...and that wouldn't be Danny Kaye before anyone comes in with a smart response (anyone = Matt)
