  • Is there actually a debate going on above about Musicals?!
  • I think I am being cornered because I like them...

I'd commend you on the bravery of your admission but then I'd just be encouraging you to post about them more!

AFI's 25 GREATEST MOVIE MUSICALS OF ALL TIME

The AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores is a list of the 25 American movie musicals of all time.

The Big Picture – AFI's Greatest Movie Musicals, was a one night only live performance the Hollywood Bowl produced by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association in cooperation with AFI.

Spanning a century of film music and counting down from 25 to number one throughout the evening, Director John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra performed excerpts from each of the winning musicals, many of them accompanied by favorite movie scenes shown on the Bowl's big video screens. This was the second time an AFI countdown was revealed before a live audience.

Good list David....but it got me thinking...Uhm...mm mm......uhmmmm....euhgmmmmm..ughaghmmmmm. So, following an intense discussion with meself and after careful consideration :

    1: Singin in the Rain

2: Top Hat West Side Story
3: Seven Brides Wizard of Oz

I will Wizard of Oz from any list...

     =)

    And I will add 8 Mile ...

  • Can't believe my two favourites never made the list.... :s
  • Musicals huh...does Elvis count? =)

  • 8 mile....hahahahaha...good one.

I asked the hubby last night if he would classify The Commitments a musical.

He said, um yeah it has music in it, some singing and dancing stuff so yeah.

My husband is never right, so I rest my case :)

    Just stirring...

Had a look at the list...more musicals I like than I thought (though again, not sure I would put Purple Rain in the musical category...his other films certainly, but not sure about this one), so perhaps I don't hate them...I just don't like them as much as others.  Caveat though...I almost never sit through the songs...

    Like:

Calamity Jane (thought I do skip through just about every song)

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - but just the bit from when they land in the town with the child catcher...

The Court Jester - I mean it's Danny Kaye!

    Gypsy

    How to Succeed in Business

    Little Shop of Horrors

    My Fair Lady

    Oliver

    Willy Wonka

Just about anything with Elvis in it...I mean they are just fun!

Do actually want to see one day:

    Cabaret

    Carmen Jones

    Singin' in the Rain

Yeah so I guess I don't hate them as much as I thought!

    They are?

I think as soon as one says Musical one automatically thinks big epic ones from the 30s, 40s and even 50s - but they can be modern too.

Technically not a musical, but this could almost fall into the genre - also I really enjoyed the film.

  • Good news...

Fox Classic (Foxtel) has MGM Musicals for the next week (or month - I can't remember which).

Oh, yes.... The Blues Brothers and Rocky horror picture show.

I love most musicals, don't know why they are so out of fashion, though I am getting on a bit.... ;)
  • Not you too Paul...

  •                                  The Frankenstein Chronicles ( 2015 )  is a brilliant 6 part T.V. series from the U.K. starring Sean Bean. Recommended.
  • Hadn't heard of that one Lawrence...will have to look into it.

The Sundowners was on telly today...great movie...terrible aussie accents, but I still love Deborah Kerr...

  • Deborah Kerr is fabulous!

I'm watching with my 10 year old nephew "The Lord of the Rings" triology. I am enjoying them like a 11 year old. Apologies to Humphrey Bogart, John Ford and Bette Davis but sometimes I just need something a bit different  =)
  • Batman vs Superman -  Terrible.
  •  Love & Friendship and Goldstone both recommended, especially liked Goldstone.
  • Agreed  on love & friendships  :) need to watch Goldstone
  • I'll be watching Batman vs Superman next week, but are not looking forward to it. Too many people have said the same thing...  shame.

I'll have some classic to follow it to cheer me up...
  •  Goldstone has Aaron Pedersen   playing the same character Jay Swan as he did in the film Mystery Road from 2013. Goldstone is a much finer crafted film than Mystery Road so if you have viewed Mystery Road and enjoyed it you are in for a real treat with Goldstone.
  • Thanks Lawrence.  Added to my watch list :)
  • Oh I really liked Mystery Road.  Will have to watch out for Goldstone.  Need that poster too!
  • Re-watched a couple of oldies I haven't seen in ages:

Gees you forget how brilliant Jack Lemon was!  So much fun, just as great as I remember it.

Lots of fun, odd to see Peck in a comedic role, and while not his finest, still enjoy it.  First time I think I actually got to sit and watch it all the way through!

    Finished off with:

Lots of fun!  Enjoyed this one very much...not usually my cup of tea these things, but the humour and action were great.  I put my vote in for one of the best bad guys!

  • Um, yeah.  Not really sure what to say about this one.

For the most part terrible acting...predictable story, nothing really original here.

I guess, don't bother with this one.  Any one else seen it?  Thoughts?
