Poor Daybill Design Decisions.

Tired out from my  previous two postings to download any images.

Does anyone have any examples from  the 1950s  ( to expand would be huge ) where the Australian artwork is poor where it could have been great just due to the decision to use the wrong overseas artwork.

Two examples of this are The Silken Affair and Cowboy. Both are boring to the extreme. Cowboy used the U.S. 3 sheet and L.C.  design when it could have used great O.S. & insert design and The Silken Affair  used ? material when the U.S. one sheet is also great.

Are there many examples where a daybill copied the US one sheet artwork?  I am sure there are at least a few but none immediately spring to mind.

It would be difficult to fit the more expansive format into the narrower medium...

See what I mean? Thanks Ves for the borrowed image.

  • Oh man!  What a shame...the one sheet is so nice!
  • Australian daybill chosen from design of U.S. one sheet & title lobby card. Why? The insert was the way to have gone.

  • Intuitively, if I were designing (even copying) a poster based off existing materials in a 15x40 or 13x30 format, I would utilize artwork that was already in a similar perspective - thus the narrow format of an insert or a three sheet would be ideal.  And this is what we see in the vast majority of daybills - it just makes sense
