F.O.M.O - Fear Of Missing Out!

Anyone else suffer from the internal turmoil of knowing that a poster being offered is more than its really worth, but its one that rarely comes up? Lord knows I've passed on some titles and not seen them since; kinda makes my stance about not paying 'X' because it was only worth 'Y' seem a bit silly now.

Probably spend a little more than I should now days to compensate!

Anyone else struggle with FOMO?

  • Common condition, and sometimes you just have to scratch it...
  • The anti-venom for this is experience which helps lead to patience.  In most cases it will come around again and perhaps at a more reasonable price point.

But then again if the price seems high but you're still actually considering buying, really in the end, it is not priced too high is it?  ;)

so I couldn't stand waiting until I was 75 for one to show up again so, as with others, gotta settle for the Yankee paper

I think waiting until I was 75 would be some kind of sick experiment in patience.  I have been patient enough on DOA paper and the threshold was surpassed
  • Think it's happened to all of us and will again. Like any hobby I guess we do it not to make a profit but to enjoy it. Some serious collectors will profit and they are darn good at it.

But if it's something you know is hard to get then I think go for it, even if you think you are over paying.

Say you pay $1000 too much, as example, and it might not come onto the market for 10years, is 27c a day to enjoy it now such a problem? Nope :)

  • I have been in the FAMO situation many times, particularly with my Hitchcock collection, and I have usually succumbed and made the purchase even though I sometimes thought I was paying way too much at the time. I'm glad I did bite the bullet though and get some of the posters because there hasn't been another opportunity. Of course there is always the possibility that someone will turn up a bunch of good titles found under floorboards, etc but sometimes it is better to get them while you can.

  • I bought one recently from Bruce that i hadn't seen on sale, only to see it come up 3-4 times since and get about half i paid. On the other hand i bought one today for about 1/10th of what it normally sells for on emovieposter so it balances out
  • I think this happens to you more when you first start out.

After you've been around for a while, if something comes up you really want and you haven't had the opportunity to buy it until this point, you will probably pay whatever the price to acquire it.

But I think as Rick says, it evens out...sometimes you pay too much, sometimes too little.

    Extremely correct.
  • Yep and then another pops up on EMP the next week in better condition.

Absolutely loathe when this happens but of course it is impossible to know it is going to occur

I am going to show my wife this just so she knows it can happen

And that has happened a few times...a rare one comes up everyone takes a run at it, then next week same again, then the next week...does my head in.

Still, the reverse can be the case and I'd hate to wait 75 years...
  • I am fairly confident 74 years is manageable but the thought of 75 was just too much
  • Wouldn't be fair on John, not sure he want to wait until he is 148 to make that special purchase...
  • No, I think I might be over posters by then.

    Yep, it happens.
This ended the other day for $3.24:

I saw the first one of those sell for $1100+ about 18 months ago. Seller sells around one a month.
  • I think I'll wait until it comes down in price, just a little more
  • Next one will do...
  • I would have paid $2.99, but $3.24 is too rich for my blood

  • I would have been the under bidder...
  • I reckon there's a factor to FOMO relating to dealer relationships. I have a couple of contacts who feed me posters from time to time and their prices can sometimes be a bit rich, but it's worth a few extra shekels to keep those contacts going.
  • That bloody Southern Cat posters...
