Classic Film Quiz

edited December 2015 in Trivia and Games

Image # 1. Name the film title.

This should be great for lovers of classic American and British films of the 1930s onwards. Image taken off a rare Australian one sheet. I have never sighted a daybill image of this film. I am not sure how popular this new quiz will be but my intention is to  introduce any following images on a limited basis only.

That would be The Good Earth (1937).

The Good Earth is a 1937 American drama film about Chinese farmers who struggle to survive. It was adapted by Talbot Jennings, Tess Slesinger, and Claudine West from the play by Owen Davis and Donald Davis, which was in itself based on the 1931 novel of the same name by Nobel Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck. The film was directed by Sidney Franklin, with uncredited contributions by Victor Fleming and Gustav Machaty.

The film stars Paul Muni as Wang Lung. For her role as his wife O-Lan, Luise Rainer won an Academy Award for Best Actress. The film also won the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Karl Freund. It was nominated for Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Picture. Its world premiere was at the elegant Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles.

  • The Good Earth it is. Luise Rainer won Best Actress Oscars for The Great Ziegfeld ( 1936 ) and The Good Earth ( 1937 ). Luise Rainer ( 1910 - 2014 ) was the first actor to win multiple Academy awards and the first person to win them consecutively.
  • The Life of Emile Zola which also starred Paul Muni won best film that same year

Correct, from the Spain (not to be confused with the re-release herald from the 1960s), the original is one ridiculously gorgeous poster.

    Ninotchka (1939) - Spain

  •  A little more colour in this image.
  • Probably over coloured to the point of ruining it
  • I agree and the image seems to have vanished from what I was sure originated from Wikipedeia being replaced by another different poster image of this film.

O.K. - not over coloured and without a watermark for all to enjoy.

    Except that's the 1960s version
  • Virtually the same poster though and still very nice and a great image. Apart from the printing on the bottom right hand corner being in bolder print, to satisfy my curiosity, what are the clues / facts to it being 1960s ?

  • Ask Bruce
  • Bruce if you are reading this please enlighten me ?

  • Image # 3. Name the film title.
  • Do we have a Lauren Bacall thread yet?

Indeed, off probably one of the sexier versions of that poster.

  • Image # 4. Name the film title.
  • Dark Passage-1947. Great movie.

  • Too easy huh?
  • No, and not sure if you got it from a Daybill-but I just happen to love that movie & one day hope to own that poster so for me, an easy one.

  •                                                                               Image # 6. Name the film title.
  • Image # 6 . A clue is that the film was based on a novel written by a famous novelist. Many well known films were adapted from the author's works and are still known and very well regarded today.
