Charlie Chaplin daybill

edited April 2016 in Poster Research
Hi guys,

I recently acquired some movie posters from an estate sale. I have a few that I can't find any information on, including this Charlie Chaplin (Back again modern times) daybill poster.

Printed by "truth and sportsman" Ltd. Sydney (?) From what I can gather they were around in the 1930's.

Any further Information on this would be greatly appreciated.

I will be back with a few more old posters that I cant find much knowledge on.

Cheers all.

  • Hi there

That poster looks very clean and fresh for a 1930s poster. Do you know if its a hand lithograph?
  • What size is it?
  • I have a few of these as well that I acquired from an estate auction a few years ago. Hondo do you know anything about these.

  • Truth and Sportsman were printing in the 1950s. Have a look at the press sheet image I am posting in the Robin Hood thread.

Truth & Sportsman Ltd was the name of the publishers of the Sunday paper, Truth, in various State editions, and the weekly Sydney Sportsman. It was ultimately sold to Fairfax in 1958, delisted in 1979 and changed to Mirror Newspapers Limited.

Truth and Sportsman Ltd was pretty much a tabloid relying on titillation as well as a healthy dose of sport, crime and divorce, all told with an alliterative flourish (such as 'From Lounge Lizard to Long Bay Lodger').

Now, none of this dates your poster for the movie Modern Times (1936) which as Reg points out looks in rather good condition.

The cinema mentioned was the smallest of Hoyts city theatres, and was known as the Esquire Theatre in the 1940’s, 1950’s and 1960’s, becoming the Town Theatre in 1965. Programming was mostly Fox second string films. Big star westerns that weren’t expected to do well were booked – films like “Broken Lance”, “Warlock”, “Track of the Cat”, and oddball films like “Modesty Blaise”.

In the final years it ran X-Rated fare but closed and was demolished for a skyscraper with offices and a shopping arcade.

So we can discount the poster being an original, plus it says 'Back Again', but it appears to be perched somewhere between the '40s and probably 1958.

Although I haven't been able to find when Esquire Theatre showed the film, if I was to take a stab perhaps the early 50s.

Thank you all for the feedback. And David that is great information, thank you.

you are correct, the poster does look to be in good condition, I think the flash and white balance made it look a little better then what it is. It has yellowed slightly, and feels kinda brittle.

Is there a way to determine if its a hand lithograph?

    The size is 12in x 24.5in

    Not sure if that helps
  • Looks like it is on thicker stock too...

  • Excellent Ves. No date though. I believe as it was re-released in the latter part of the year 1955 in Melbourne this would be the year for Sydney as well.

    Well done.
  • Thanks again everyone, great information.

Would this poster hold any interest/value for a collector? is it something I should get framed?
  • It's certainly unique in it's size and different. If you like it, get it framed. It's an interesting piece of movie memorabilia.
  • Frame it and love it. A great piece bug not worth an early retirement
  • I think I will get this one framed, I like the simplicity of it and I'd like to preserve its condition.

I'm glad I found this community, it seems very helpful and full of information. I'm very much a newbie to the movie poster scene, but I'm already addicted.

I picked up 30 posters including this one for $2 each, most are of modern films, but a hand full of older ones, so my problem is figuring out what ones to get framed and if any are valuable.

The old interweb is useful, but its a lot for a newbie to take in, and figure out all the lingo, the re-release posters, reproductions, Australian Daybills etc.

The chap that passed away was apparently involved with the cinemas for his entire life, he had close to 200 posters in total, now I'm wishing I picked up more.

A few of the older ones include
spoilers of the plains (Roy Rogers) 1951
The kid from broken gun - 1952
    Gone with the wind - 1967 re-release
Silver spurs (buck Jones) - re-release
    Vertigo (Hitchcock)

    more modern noteworthy ones include
    Mars attacks
    Spiderman
    Star wars trilogy

I'm really looking forward to getting some of these framed and displayed.
And I'm already wanting to add to the collection. I'd really like to get into some vintage sci-fi and horror, motorcycle and auto posters like "On any sunday' and "Le Mans" as well as some 80's skateboarding films namely Bones brigade (powell peralta) productions.
  • The hobby is fun so good luck!

It's a great look that design, a similar is on Gold Rush, it's superb.

I think everyone will have different advice on what to frame and so on.

Personally frame what you like to look at then see if you've got some walls left and frame some more! I am sure there will be some inspiration from this thread: http://vintagemoviepostersforum.com/discussion/15/recent-hangings/p1

  • Well I got my first poster in a frame. Looks great IMO, not cheap and only took 3 weeks lol, but I'm happy with it.
  • THAT is great. I love that image, well done and congrats
  • Nice!  Looks fantastic.
  • Your right! That does look great! :plus_one:
  • Thumbs up here, well done!
  • That's a nice looking Chaplin daybill and a sharp looking framing job, too.
