Easy Rider Posters

Easy Rider ( 1969 ). Easy Rider was first released in Australia in 1970. Both these posters are sometimes referred to as being Australian daybills and from the original release. Your thoughts ?

Something that was meant only for ''My Drafts'' but I had pressed the wrong heading by accident.

First is an NZ daybill.  Prolly a photocopy of the Insert...much like the Dirty Harry NZ daybill.

Second is something someone came up with on their own when they were bored at a local cinema...I have had a few of these in my time...not easy rider but plenty of other titles.

Yes the first image is from a NZ daybill.

More on the second image later and probably a little more complicated than that.

This daybill was printed for the re-release of Easy Rider in New Zealand that took place in the late 1970's. The original 35mm version was classified ( with cuts ) R16  on 25-7-1969 in New Zealand. The film on 35mm was classified R16 again on 12.12.1977 for a re-release, and this time with no cuts applying.

Additional information someone may be interested in about the original New Zealand release dealing with the censor ordered cuts are as follows.

Part 6, Reel 4A. - ''In sequence where Hansen is offered & accepts Marihuana cigarette delete all remarks about about ''not getting hooked'' & ''not hurting him'' ''having nice taste'' etc. but allow him to be seen smoking it. Delete later remark about ''-giving you a whole way of looking at life''.

Part 8 Reel 5B. - Reduce psychedelic sequence deleting all views of girls undressing, lovemaking in nude & other nude views.

The second stock daybill I earlier also added to this thread I will give details about as soon as I receive some confirmation to confirm my thoughts about it.

The image showing on the above re-release daybill,  that Ves had mentioned earlier as being a photocopy is the same style and has the image that appeared on the original 1969 U.S. insert but with some alterations to the wording and placement of it  on the poster and also some additional wording added as well on the bottom of the poster.

  •  More about this daybill poster next week and then the original daybills and one sheets need to be discussed as well.

It has taken a while but I have finally confirmed that this daybill design didn't originate from a cinema owner's efforts as Ves thought but from Robert Burton the printers themselves. I have recently sighted a copy of this daybill which was part of a small supply of this exact poster design which originated from a warehouse supply of posters printed for theatrical release and / or 16mm release in Australia. There was an error in the printing of the censorship R rating on the poster. The original release of Easy Rider in Australia was classified ( with cuts ) with a Suitable Only For Adults rating in 1970, prior to the R certificate being introduced in Australia in November 1971. Easy Rider has never been given an R certificate in Australia. This would mean then the above crude  poster would have had to have been printed in Australia  sometime post November 1971 for whatever reason with an incorrect censorship raring appearing on it. The rating should have been printed as M on the daybill.
  • So the yellow bit is actually printed onto the Columbia stock poster and not glued on?

Yes a 100% printed poster. Outside of this forum a contact was kind enough to send me a copy of the daybill to view that was sighted by me again a few minutes ago. An ugly example of a daybill if I have ever seen one.
  • Oh ok...for the picture I thought the yellow bit had been stuck onto a stock daybill.  Good info.  Thanks!
