UK buyers Be Aware IMPORT TARIFF and how to claim it back
Hello
Just wanted to share my recent experience with the UK Border Force (setting import tax). And share the info you might need if you are in the same circumstances.
I just received a £600 refund from the UK tax office ( hurrah!!) I was overcharged and had to claim it back. When the poster arrived to the UK from US it did not have the right tax code. So I was charged a 20% VAT rather than the 5% VAT as it is a collector's item. So here is what you need to do:
1- Ask the importer to ship it to the UK adding the right import tariff to avoid problems: The correct import tarif is 9705000030 This is section XXI : import Tariffs for works of art, collectors pieces and antiques. It applies to items that have a historical value . HERE 5% VAT rate applies (not 20%) https://www.gov.uk/trade-tariff/sections/21
2- If that fails and you are overcharged. Fill in C285 if the parcel has been cleared by Parcelforce or UPS in the UK. And you should get your money back.
3- if the parcel was cleared by Border Force and you were overcharged by Border Force then you need to fill in a different form: BOR286
So, before embarking in claims, do check who cleared your package and fill in C285 or BOR 286 , do your research as it will save you time.
I still dont know why in the UK agents get it wrong all the fricking time. Anyway.
Happy hunting, happy importing and happy taxing.

So much money in the purse and so many Bogarts around, waiting to be purchased...
Eres rápida, mujer!
I agree! I read Rosa's original warning and it could have been written in a foreign language. I had no clue about the verbiage-I'm like why are they paying the govt to get a poster delivered from outside the country?
if tea doesn't work, try some scones! ...or are those Irish...
