I went to Cinevent

I just took three days off and went to the annual Cinevent convention in Columbus, Ohio (which is also where Morris Everett Jr holds his yearly auction).

Most people go to buy collectibles, or to see old movies, but I solely go to once again see old friends (and also to meet new friends I have made the last years online, but whom I have not yet met in person).

I got to see and catch up with just about every really major poster dealer there is (people like Mike Orlando, Steve Sally Sr and Jr.), plus a lot of super long time collectors I have known forever, and some I have dealt with for a long time, but whom I was first meeting in person.

I am not going to try to mention them all, because I would surely leave some people out, and meeting with everyone was great for me, but two highlights of the show were getting to visit with Gene Arnold, who had some medical issues this year, and I was afraid he would not be there, but I guess nothing could keep Gene away, and also meeting Carmen Tango for the first time!

But the best single time I had was sitting with Dan (the Posterman) Strebin, Walter Reuben and Matthew McCarthy, and talking about rare posters. I felt like I was taking a "Master Class" on the subject, and I should have been getting charged a hefty fee!

I didn't think the combined knowledge of that trio could be raised much, but then Joe Burtis (of MPA Gallery) walked over and sat down as well, so it was, and I could have listened to those four all night long!

I drove 9 1/2 hours there to be there, and 9 1/2 hours back, but it was well worth all the travel time!

  • Sounds like it was a great time. The master class on rare posters surely was something to behold.
  • The sort of thing that would be a pleasure to eavesdrop in on...
  • Nice post Bruce-I'd love to attend one of those in the coming years...
  • One of these days...
  • That's called Dreamtime in Australia.
  • One thing that might surprise you guys is how accessible almost all these people are. There are a few people who solely care about selling, but for the most part everyone else loves to talk posters or movies, and they treat total strangers as friends they haven't met yet.

Everyone who pre-signed up wore a badge around their neck giving their full name, so that made it super easy to spot people you knew by name but not sight.

Next year is the 50th show. I highly recommend it as a social event, and the only remaining show where so much of the hobby comes together in one place.

  • Every year I say "This year".  Something always comes up.  This year it sort of snuck up on me.  Didn't even realize it was time until folks started posting about being there. :(

It would help a LOT if they would enter the 21st Century and make good use of free social media.
