Suzan Ball ( originally Susan ) is the answer to GG. The image shown was from Yankee Buccaneer ( 1952 ), in which she starred with Jeff Chandler and Scott Brady, pictured with her in the lobby card above. She was a second cousin of Lucille Ball seen above with her. This up and coming actress with Universal studios in the early 1950's had an accident while filming a dance number for the film East Of Sumatra ( 1953 ). In 1954, due to results of a tumor that had spread to her lungs and the accident that she had, here right leg was amputated. After the amputation, and later that year in April, she married fellow actor Richard Long, who she had become engaged to in December 1953. Suzan Ball died in August 5, 1955 an the age of only 21. A promising career cut short . She had been proclaimed one of the most important ''New Stars of 1953'' by Hedda Hopper. She was also a singer and sang with the Mel Baker Orchestra from 1948-1953, finishing up with them when her career at Universal was taking off.
Correct Matt and well done. The clue of ''one of 18,000'' refers to the number of women who auditioned for the title role of Joan Of Arc in the film Saint Joan ( 1957 ), with Jean Seberg being the one who ended up securing the role.
Jean Seberg as she appeared in Lilith ( 1964 ) and a nice image of her from her first film role in Saint Joan ( 1957 )
More actresses coming your way soon. Not these two beauties though as they are too recognisable.
NN answer is Helen Walker, shown above left in a scene from Nightmare Alley ( 1947 ) with Tyrone Power, and above right is a publicity shot from Impact ( 1949 ). She also appeared in many other films including Call Northside 777 ( 1948 ), Her Adventurous Night ( 1946 ) & Murder, He Says ( 1945 ). Helen Walker died at the age 47 from cancer in 1968.
The connection I had originally mentioned between Helen Walker and Jill Ireland, the earlier answered MM question, is that they both died from cancer. As previously mentioned Helen Walker at age 47 and Jill Ireland at age 54. My ''and time will tell if this image above will make on impact'' clue given regarding the black and white Impact publicity image wasn't picked up on.
