Tips for removing fingerprints?

Hi,

New member here.

I have a few posters with a couple of visible fingerprints on them. Does not appear to be dirt, just ordinary fingerprints from a slightly sweaty hand.

I am certain that a professional restorer could remove these during restoration, but is there any less intrusive way to do this myself? Paper-wise, we are talking both a modern glossy poster, an older poster printed on some more matte paper and a movie program.

The fingerprints are only visible in black areas, like a black background or a photo in the movie program.

I saw someone using something called Absorene for removing surface dirt from a poster. Would that maybe do the trick?

  • Hi thomsem, this is a good topic. never tried it myself. My first guess would dabbing alcohol on a light tissue and wiping it off???
  • On modern glossy posters, just get a clean tissue and rub.
Come off quite easy for me...
  • If it were my own poster I would simply use alcohol and a cotton ball or even mixed with a bit of distilled water. One problem is if the oil had already damaged the paper, rubbing could fade the black area.

Option on two is to use eraser crumbs or Absorene...
