New to linen backing

Hello,  after about a decade away from posters, I am back into it. I had purchased all the materials necessary for linen backing and have built 2 frames.  Before tackling any type of collectible poster,  I figured I'd start with some posters that I've gotten for free from the movie theater.   They are the double sided types. I know they are difficult to do, but watching the PosterFix videos on YouTube, they say it's possible.   They say the added an ingredient to the paste to alleviate air bubbles. Anyone have any idea what that would be???
By the way, my results have been poor. Some bubbles and some wrinkles. I've also have damged the paper in some spots by over rolling a wrinkle. Ugh!
Are they any other tips folks have regarding backing a 2 sided poster?? Thanks, Gerard

  • The primary issue with double sided posters is some are multi-ply paper and bubbles develop from water getting in between the layers.

The best thing to do is allow the poster to get almost dry before attempting to back. Also put the masa on the cotton (raw) canvas a couple days before so that it is also dry. Then mist both to dampen and apply wheat paste and back.

Lastly, don’t fully rely on posterfix videos. He is not conservative (rough handling, application, touchup, etc.) at all, his wheat paste looks like a powder mix, and well just don’t watch. Go back to the poster mountain blogs and google paper conservation and interleaving. There are some great videos out there.
  • Which of the threads give the step by step instructions on linen backing a poster, including washing, bleaching, and drying?
  • All the information is available...  One day, if I ever find the time, I'll write a book and sell it on amazon. And no other conservator or linenbacker will agree with everything in it.  What works for me didn't always work for @Eisenhower or whomever else picked up the bits of info on the site. And that is all well and good. I am not a professional - never have claimed to be. I have no formal training. I would be leary to even listen to myself.  That is why these threads are titled "Amateur".   You may ask where did I get info - I just googled my butt off.

Learning the art and science of the craft is the journey. You can't just wake up and be spot on. You have to use the info here and on the other websites available; use trial and error until you find what works for you. I could probably say I never backed a batch of posters the same way over the 3 years or so I was attempting.  I kept revising and improvising. Testing and experimenting.

Several bits and pieces are under this thread:
