The Fly 1986 movie poster, original or fake ?

Hi ! I'm having a hard time figuring out if two of my movie posters are fake or original, because I have no experience with USA printed posters.
Seems to be USA movie posters use digital printing since many many years ago, while here in Spain they use OFFSET, much more clear to see under the microscope and even at first sight.
Also, if this two posters are originals, the paper is MUCH more thick. In general they are completely at another level, much more quality.
But maybe I'm totally wrong and this two posters are completely fake ! Can't see it clearly because fake posters, of course, are printed also in digital.

So, I have "The Fly", 1986 and "Hook", 1991, movie posters, alegedly originals.

For now I'm gonna leave here pics, including some taken with a microscope, of "The Fly" movie poster, maybe some of you have that poster and can help me.

The poster have a little scratch where I can see the fibers of the thick paper.

Thank you in advance

  • This dot matrix print style is pretty common. I also am not sure why anyone would fake this poster… let me dig some more.
  • I would think in 1986 they would still be using offset and offset printing techniques do use dot gain from a quick read so the only difference may be the inks…
  • could you take an overall photo? As Charlie said, The Fly wouldn't be a high priority for bootleggers

I’m not sure we can tell from the details and photos.

    1. What makes you think they are fake? Did you find out the seller was selling fakes? What makes you curious?
    2. Measurements are a great way to tell right away - measure them.
    3. Thicker/thinner paper appears common in 80s posters so that is not a help.
    4. These aren’t $500 posters - fakers need to make cash and printing a bunch of $50 posters isn’t the best way when weighed against the risks.
    5. Also check the text variations some are regular NSS, studio, international. There could be multiple versions for the same poster artwork.

I’m sure others might have insights…
  • I was going to ask along similar lines to Charlie.
Where did they come from?  Overall images would be good to see if cropped different.

Like the others, not a huge title so I dont know why anyone would bother with bootlegs.

I have spanish posters and the paper is very different to that of the US ones.

Hi ! Thank you for answer ! I just woke up, so, I'll take an overall picture later, Hehehe ! :D

But I can tell the measures are spot on, they are exactly what they must be, not even half a milimeter off :

    The Fly :
    - Size : 27 in x 41 inches =  685,8 x 1041,4 mm
    - Weight : 88 g

    Hook :
    - Size : 27 in x 40,5 inches =  685,8 x 1028,7 mm
    - Weight : 85 g

Charlie : As I said, I don't have experience with USA posters; spanish posters, as theartofmovieposters said, are very different, in the paper and also in the printing process; a fake spanish poster (I have one or two becase I bought them as fakes) is very easy to spot, because the paper is very thin, very cheap, non reflective and the CMYK pattern of the OFFSET printing is very difficult to fake, any very small variation is noticeable from far away; also, the CMYK pattern dots looks very different from digital printing under the microscope

Why I'm suspicious ? Because this two posters, "The Fly" and "Hook" are the only ones I have with very thick paper, very similar to typical good injection printer paper and the printing looks very much like printed in digital, I never saw that before in a movie poster; also, none of them are folded, they are rolled, they were in perfect shape. And they are the only ones I bough from a new seller from Spain.

I have a few more posters printed in USA and the paper is very different, but the printing not so much : "Ocean's Eleven" (2001), "Deathstalker" (1984), "Blame it on Rio" (1984), "Blame it on the Bellboy" (1992), "The Avengers" (1998) and "The Fourth Protocol" (1987)

So, I have no idea what to think, to be honest. I was looking for original "The Fly" and "Hook" posters to have a reference, but no luck yet

And this is important to me not because maybe I bough two fake posters, that can happen, but because I want to buy more from the same guy and I don't want to pay every time for fake posters as originals, obviously, Hehehe !

I'll send later an overall pic, Thank you both for the answer !

  • Hi ! As I promised, I took a few pics of the posters, Very difficult ! I don't have space, good light or a good camera, but, Here we go !

Hook is easier, because is not so dark. And, Yes ! Those are plastic bags full of lentils :D

  • I had a US Fly one sheet I got direct from someone who used to work for Fox and it was very good quality paper, looked identical to the one you have. I can't see why they both wouldn't be genuine.

  • dedeposter, Perfect ! Thank you for your answer ! Now I know how those USA posters are, so I have now something to compare and, most important, I can be sure the seller is trusty and I can continue buying from him

Maybe this two posters are very cheap in USA, but was not so cheap for me in Spain : 45 € for "The Fly" and 53 € for "Hook" (be aware wages here in Spain are VERY low compared to USA). I also bough another posters, as I said, directly from USA and, Adding shipping and customs almost doubled the price !

    Thank you, again !
