Is there a different cleaning/backing technique for modern 1-sheets?

I was getting an estimate from a local paper restorer for cleaning and backing posters, and he said that he doesn't work on anything that has the glossy overcoat, like anything modern or even semi-modern. I know I've seen linen-backed Pulp Fiction and things like that. Is glossy a different process from vintage items?

  • The problem with moderns is you don’t know
how they will react once wet.

For double sided or thick posters with shiny back side, the coatings (resin or oil based) sometimes do not allow air to escape through and can cause bubbling. So you get in this cycle of having to make a small incision to release the water/air.  Now if the poster is beat to hell the water/air gets release through folds or creases.

Also since most modern are this ink resin layer the image can flake off and is terribly hard to reproduce since most moderns are photographic which is hard to touch up or recreate.

  • What is the movie poster and year?
  • I would think with the vast majority (I accept not all) of modern posters the sheer volume of them out there would make it more economical to replace them with a better copy rather than sending them off for restoration.
