Tarzan 3-sheet

Hi guys. I have this Tarzan 3-sheet from which I can't find any information online. I believe it was used locally here in the 50s but by the style to me it looks like it could originally be from the 30s? The title has been painted over (Tarzan and His Mate) but at the bottom it only says Tarzan, so I figure it could have been just a general Tarzan poster.
Does anyone know anything about it? What would you estimate this for value? I'm thinking of suggesting a trade to a collector who likes the film and he has a poster that I want, but before it I'd like to hear some kind of valuation. It has originally been linenbacked by the distributor like all big posters did back then, and it has some issues but I think it's a beautiful poster.
(btw this section seems a bit dead but hopefully someone sees it)

Looks like it might be this one printed over or at least the basis for the one you posted, although the orange/brown vs the green background is a curious variation.Perhaps printed later using the same plates but for a different reason? Yours looks more like a duotone which quite often happens with reissues so that might be a clue.

  • Tarzan Ja Valkoinen Nainen ( Tarzan And His Mate ) Finnish one sheet that would appear to be a re-release from the 1960's that used a  stock poster.

Thanks for founding this one's brother. Although they look the same, many details are different when I looked at the hi-res image. So it isn't just a reprint with different colors. Interesting.
It seems Tooker was still around in the late 40's at least so hard to guess the exact time yet.

  • Tooker Litho Co. N.Y.  ( previously J,H, Hooker Print New York ) above presentation was of concern to me, so I researched into it.

Tooker were printing American MGM one sheet posers for MGM in the 1930s. The following The Girl From Missouri  MGM  poster is from 1934, You will notice the Tooker name credit appears in a logo form in the body of the poster.

Also this Mutiny On The Bounty 1935 one sheet with the Tooker logo seen within the image.

Tarzan Escapes was originally released in the U.S.A. in 1936. The poster being queried  that appears above on the right  has the Tarzan Escapes U.S. artwork, but the Finnish translated Tarzan And His Mate title printed on it.

Another thing is that I find the hand written printer's credit as a bit of a mystery.

The poster  would have to be a re-release poster  from most likely the 1940.s would be my guess.

I wouldn't believe big dollars would be involved here.

  • The title has been painted on to the poster. The printer credit is printed on, my phone camera is a bit crappy so it makes it look worse. On the left corner it says litho in U.S.A.
  • Definitely a re-release. MGM often printed duotone posters with the same art as the full-color originals in the 1940s to 1960s.

It saved money on not buying new art, and duotone printing is way cheaper than full-color.

Given it being a re-release combined with MUCH lesser condition, I would accept any offer you could live with.

O.k. then it would appear  that the poster was originally printed in the U.S.A.

Where then was the Finnish film title, and the following sentence in Finish added to the poster, along with the other alterations? In Finland or even possibly  the U.S.A. one has to wonder?

In Finland. We got international posters from most if not all films alongside our own smaller printed ones. That means 6-sheets, 3-sheets, 1-sheets, quads, German, Swedish, French, Italian... you name it. They either handpainted the titles over the original ones, cut a hole and pasted the painted title on the back before linenbacking, or just slapped a pasted title on top. On older ones they made more effort with the painting and design, later they became more lazy.
99% of these international ones were linenbacked and they travelled from theatre to theatre, so you couldn't keep them or give them away. They always had to be returned to the distributor so finding any is extremely hard. I've owned almost 10 000 posters and I've only had maybe 20-30 of linenbacked ones. If you find one, it's a safe bet it's the only one in existance.
  • Interesting information Lex. I must have missed in the past you being from Finland. Just located your thread that you posted in June 2018 titled Lex's movie posters.
  • Yeah, it's been a while I've posted, sorry about that. o:) Mostly just lurking around!
But yeah, these are so hard to find that I doubhr they haven't left here to anywhere else. Outside people would just think that they're ruined, here it's local history and every one is unique.
