Rare Australian Daybills censored in New Zealand

Here are 3 quite rare Australian Daybills that were heavily censored in New Zealand. Two of the posters have knives blacked out and Trapp Family has text blacked out.

  • For those who may be also interested in viewing the offending original material, it is included below.

  • The words "To a Man" on the Trapp Family daybill were considered too shocking for NZ audiences!
  • Some additional information.

The Australian daybill displaying the knife, but interestingly the Australian one sheet from the same printer Robert Burton was drawn without the knife appearing.at all.

The British one sheet that was used in New Zealand had the knife image censored. as seen above. This was along with three other sighted images as well.
  • Someone had to carefully black out offending text or images on every poster before distribution to cinemas. Seems like a very time consuming process.

Yes you do have to wonder that due to the many known examples of poster censorship that occurred in New Zealand just how time consuming the process really must have been.

You have mentioned exactly what I had been thinking as well Bruce about how boring the job must have been.
