Studio M. Vintage Posters

Studio M is Australia's only linebacker who is still operating. Michael Brewster worked in New York City for eight years crafting his skills before he returned to Sydney to start his own business. He also specialises in oversized paper.

Studio M has done most of my linen backing since 2006. Probably around 30 really oversize 2F and bigger, and lots more too. At the smaller previous location a few years back I had a 2.75m poster backed there. The new place can probably do up to about 2.2 x 3.5 meters and all on thicker more rigid linen than the flimsy European and American linen. All good things eventually come to an end though and I'd say if you want it backed, do it sooner rather than later.

  • Is he closing down Steve?
  • Is he? because that seems to be old news?
  • No not closing down. There is too much work if anything, which is a testament to the good service Michael provides.

Not sure what the old news is. I guess I was last over there about 8 months ago and was there probably at least every month for the prior 8 years, (and I also built for Michael the Studio M website gallery (product) section).

Like anything, things change. The work is back breaking and I couldn't do it. If the service became unavailable, with so much demand for backing, I'm sure another business here would fill any void. If you want Studio M to do the work though, just saying, I probably wouldn't wait assuming it will always be around. I currently have everything backed that I want backed.

Wish I could cover my salary, I'd be game.  I'd have to hire someone - it literally is back breaking work...  I am still trying to figure out a way to not be hunched over all the time.

    Hire a "little person"
  • The best way is to be suspended horizontally by ceiling cables as you work

  • Michelangelo did his best work on his back...
  • Hire Matt, he has a passion for linen..

    Freaking awesome!!!!

  • You can't buy boards of the same length in Australia?
  • Hows this guys resto work?
  • Are you sure Charlie that it isn't because it is a different metric system lol.

    You're right! >:)
  • And then again maybe they use the same measurements when it comes to wood.
  • What "regular" and "too cheap to buy another board"...

Or "perfect" and "not so perfect"...

Or "just right" and "fuck it, who will ever know"...

Those "L" plates (4) cost about $4. A new board costs about $5...

That extra masa and cotton canvas to the right of the sixer costs about $5...

  • I loved these posters from the moment you posted them, and just like watching a good movie over and over they grow on you more. As for Michael I have used him a couple of times for linen backing and fold line touch up. He has an amazing eye for color matching .
  • Hi David where there is paper replacement on the border did you request just replacement or this and paint work? Happy with how it looks close up? I found Michaels approach and he tells you is that "less is best" he's easy to talk to about these things I'm not sure what happened with truth will out review ?http://www.productreview.com.au/p/studio-m-vintage-posters.html
  • Yes Michael is a less is best, Michael did the borders without being asked - besides such very small amount missing. Also he doesn't airbrush if at all possible

I can't tell what really happened with that bad review, obviously not happy.
  • Wow that is a scathing review

Fortunately someone else left a nice review recently, and provided a link this forum for examples!
  • Just a heads up, I have communicated with Studio M and spoken to Hanna via email.  I am going into Collingwood next Tuesday and taking some 3 sheets with me.

If I like what I see and feel comfortable I will be leaving some three sheets to be linen backed that require minimal if any work.

I will keep you all posted as to how I go and what the quality of their work is like.

  • Thanks Rob!

  • I visited Studio M this morning and was very impressed with Hanna.  I have left the attached 3 sheets with Hanna and should have them completed early January.

Once they have been finished and I pick them up I will let you know about the quality of the work.  I will then leave my remaining 3 sheets to be linen backed.

So far I am quite comfortable with the studio and some of their current clients which include various art galleries in Melbourne and some Dealers.

All I need to do now is break the fact I have all of these posters to my wife so she will let me hang them on the wall.   =)
  • Wow they look great Rob should come up a treat.

How much does she charge for a 3 sheet with no resto? Is she going to wash them before she lays them down on linen?
