BRAZIL 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES

Anyone watching this? I'm looking forward to the opening ceremony!...and Athletics...and basketball!

  • I dunno, I'm in two minds about this one.

When I read about the terrible issues the country has and the ridiculous amount of money they spent on hosting the Olympics, it pains me...and then the realist in me keeps hoping please oh please don't let anything happen during the games.  What a terrible time the world is having of late, particularly Europe.

Then the other part of my brain says isn't this kinda why we need something positive to hold onto?

Not a fan of the opening/closing ceremonies (too long! - I'm old now, I fall asleep really easily given the chance :) ), but will mostly likely watch some of the sports...swimming, athletics...

  • I'm with Ves - just get on with it, the whole ceremony thing is so drawn out and all about one-upmanship it lacks holding power anymore.

As to these Olympics, I fear the worst and hope I am wrong but with so many issues already happening to individuals, teams, the drugs, the pollution, the crime - it's just too hard to ignore and really expect it will lessen for the 2 weeks the event is on.
  • I always watch swimming and gymnastics...
  • I'll watch the opening ceremonies a little. Ves & David said much of what I feel, believe.

Agree. They are sports I never watch till the Olympics- too watch the very best in the world is truly entertaining.
  • I'll watch the swimming, the rowing and a bit of the indoor cycling.
  • I'll watch the golf and the tennis, right after I remove my eyes with a rusty fork and use them as conkers in what may as well be another Olympic sport if those ones are.
  • Thanks all! I agree with Ves, it is a tough one given the current political & financial climate (what she said, well put)
But there's always something that brings some sort of childhood memories.  I used to watch the Games with my granny. I  also still remember the last Games London 2012 ..I was there!! So I want to watch it...and probably be wondering how come we are in 2016...London 2012 feels like ...yesterday...

" yesterday...all my troubles seem so faaar awaaaaay...."  =)

  • London was a very well run event
  • Oh the cycling.  love me some cycling in the velodrome!

And yes gymnastics are good too, except all the ribbon twirling and ball catching.  I still don't get that.  Very skilled yes, but um weird!

Brazil's problem right now is more political than economic. As we know, economy has better or worst moments in every country (Brazil's was not going very well lately), but the virtual cuop d'etat going on has heaten things up. A lot.
  • Oh the cycling.

    Yes, cycling.

    Needs some motivation
  • Just send me all the daybills and I will try to make the Canadian women stop their steamroller ;)

  • That Aussie goalkeeper sure appears to be clinging to the pitch pretty tight...
  • Well the opening ceremonies are on so...
  • Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi! Oi! Oi!. Currently running second in the medal count.
  • There is always a second...
  • Also a third.

I guess you are right, we got third two times...  Worst in our history.

Be interesting to see the count once they take back all the medals off the drug cheats

Curious to know which of the three versions you watch ?  Is it the 123 or 124 minute original theatrical version , the 155 minute version or the 173 minute version.

I have only seen the film on DVD after its first theatrical releases here in Australia. I remember enjoying it very much but I can clearly remember throughout the credits at the end there were many brief scenes shown that weren't in the film I had just watched and I found that most annoying. My question is if I was to revisit the film which version do you recommend ?

  • I'll jump onto Lawrence's post.  I haven't seen it but it is on my to watch list, so it will be good to get your feedback on which version to watch. :)
