Movie poster cliches

An old topic I know...

Movie poster cliches

 By Abraham Piper

If you’ve ever felt like movie posters are all the same, you now have proof that your hunch is right, thanks to these compilations by Christophe Courtois…

1. Big heads in the sky over tiny people on a beach

2. From the back (often with weaponry)

3. Big text on faces

4. Back to back

5. In bed

6. Through the legs

7. Big eye

8. Blue

9. Running for their lives

10. Cute red dress

Benches

Graphical Blindfolds

Yellow Indies

Reflective Glasses

Women Looking Backward

Comments

  • which explains why i rarely collect modern posters, though to be fair I Walk the Line is cool and there are a few decent posters among the dross
  • LOT of old posters in the examples, specially Cute Red Dress and a few in Woman Looking Backward (You can click on image to view and then click again to zoom)
  • Yeah i noticed, but they weren't so cliched back then!
  • 'tis true
  • Nostalgia, it ain't what it used to be.

Back in the 40s and 50s we saw a lot of
    - Hirschfield art
    - Westerns with young woman holding leg of man with smoking gun
    - Musicals with couple in a sweeping dance move.  Usually yellow or white background.
    - Still a lot of floating heads.
    etc.

I expect if I made an effort, I could create the same sort of composite just with movies from the 40s and 50s.
  • I guess not many people would complain about floating head poster design if this was on their wall

  • not a cliche yet, when you are the first :)
