Elisha Cook, Jr. had his first major role in The Devil is Driving after a handful of minor appearances. He played the son of a rich man who keeps driving drunk, and he uses his father's influence to get him out of every jam, and then he kills an old lady while driving drunk, and his father helps him yet again, but the District Attorney who has helped the father get his son out of jams realizes the error of his ways, and teams up with a beautiful newspaper reporter to see that justice is done.

It is indeed I Want To Live! from 1958. Susan Hayward received a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of real life Barbara Graham. She was sentenced to death for murder, and executed in a gas chamber.
