From Russia With Love - What year was this one sheet released?

I picked up this FRWL one sheet recently with a big collection of Australian posters. Does anyone have any thoughts on the year of release? Possibly a second printing? Has anyone seen an earlier FRWL Aust one sheet?

  • Strange there are no robert burton printer details?
  • 2nd or later print run from the same release season would be my guess. It's the exact same image as the original so the same plate was used
  • Do you have an image of the original, David?
  • Well, I don't think that one is any more original than the one I have!

I was only posting the original one to yours

Wasn't the design used for a re-release season in the 70s?

Sorry, not sure what you mean. The two one sheets that are pictured, one with blue text and one with black text would both have been printed at the same time. I don't think one came before the other.
  • Okie...then go back to the bit I said about it being from 70s and ignore the other bit I said
  • It has to be pre 1971 but lets hear what Lawrence thinks about it.

1960's up to 1967.         Logo from 1968 onwards.

My opinion is that the poster in question was a second printing produced between 1964, the year of the Australian release, and 1967, the last year the United Artists name  was advertised in this manner. In early 1968 the Transamerica  Corporation logo was printed on Australian daybills. An odd thing is that the original 3 sheet pictured above image that was supplied by David has ''released thru United Artists'' printed on the poster but our poster in question has had the ''released thru'' wording covered over and removed. The one indisputable fact is due to the Not Suitable For Children censorship rating on John's query poster it is certainly without doubt pre December1971.

  • I agree with you Lawrence. The strange thing is no one seems to have seen an original FRWL one sheet.

  • So, just to be clear, this one is the same printing and same year of release as the one pictured in the first post - probably a second printing.
  • There are also some other James Bond Australian film posters, apart from ''From Russia with Love'', that re-release dates are purely speculative. I am currently working on four other titles at present with iffy re-release decade details or of calling the poster original release. More at a later date as I wish to be thorough with my findings..

  • Lawrence, have you ever seen an earlier FRWL one sheet than the two that are pictured in this thread?

Sorry John to inform you that I haven't.

Something of interest is the same design on your poster in question, that also appears on the original Robert Burton printed Australian 3 sheet, in comparison to the 3 sheet is so much inferior in the artwork department.

  • Yes, the artwork is indeed inferior but it does seem to be the earliest one sheet that has been seen for FRWL.

    Agreed.

    Agreed.

If it is the earliest one sheet that has been seen, is there a possibility that it could be the original first release? The lack of printers details and crappy images would make you wonder about that but it is extraordinary that no one has sighted an earlier one sheet.

Anything is possible but I for one don't believe this image in question is original. As the original 3 sheet is the same design I would think a completely different design would have appeared on an original full colour Australian one sheet.  I have a large list of films, including some classic titles, where no Australian poster images have surfaced to date, for whatever reason. It is just one of those annoying things that happen in life that we have to contend with. There is also hope that perhaps one day a copy will appear from someone's collection for all to see.

Not according to you and Lawrence.

I've sent a help request out to a veteran Bond collector, specialising in books and artwork.

According to him that is the original poster for an " Australian "From Russia With Love" posters: Original 1 sheet, 3 sheet and the original daybill plus the 2 daybill reissues. The artwork in Australia was re-drawn to accomodate the printing technique used."

If he shows up and joins the forum and then posts it may not shed anymore light but it may just add to the discussion
  • Well we are talking FRWL the most elusive bond aussie paper!  Do we suspect the one sheet would be full colour like the daybill?  How long did it take to spot the first release daybill?  30 years!!

The From Russia With Love New Zealand daybill credited just above as being original 1963 releases is actually a reissue poster. It clearly states on the poster '' Re-released thru United Artists'' just above the Technicolor wording, situated in the bottom right hand corner.
  •  A clearer version of the New Zealand poster showing the '' Re-released thru United Artists'' wording.

  • Post 1971 press sheet for the Australian re-release of From Russia With Love. Interestingly one sheets and 3 sheets are not listed under accessories.

For anyone interested this New Zealand daybill poster was printed 1976 or later, but definitely not before.
  • the NZ re-release is better than the old aussie one-sheets.
  • I would certainly never claim to have a great deal of knowledge in these areas as I am a novice compared to all of the people on this forum.

I would hazard a guess as to second printing as the artwork appears to be simplified.

The attached images are from the FRWL 3 sheet first printing that I have just acquired and the imagery is far more detailed.  I would presume the same imagery would have been utilised for the one sheet?

I may be incorrect.  The Robert Burton title is also at the bottom of the first run it would appear and not so on the second run for some reason??
