Correct and well done. The more obscure film now answered and out of the way. The Tall Target from 1951. This film was directed by one on my favourite film directors Anthony Mann.  Adolphe Menjou being the well known face.

Dick Powell, Marshall Thompson and Adolphe Menjou

The original U.S.A. insert poster, and a completely different style of Australian artwork. The plot of the film was about an attempt to assassinate President- elect Abraham Lincoln aboard a train journey,

My thoughts only are that when the film failed at the U.S. box office the powers to be decided to change the poster artwork to be used in Australia. They decided to promote the film as being a more contemporary thriller.
  • C219 - Memento (2000) - once again, a film I need to catch up with but it's a well known image.

Correct. Another film on my to catch up to view list as well.

  • Clues for the yet unanswered images that would appear to be a difficult in finding answers for.

C218 - The film's director was also part of the action.

    C220 - A connection with the answered C222 image.

C221 - Great song featured in the film.

     C223
Another image to have a think about.

  • C223 brought TICKET TO TOMAHAWK to mind, but it is probably wrong.

I have racked my brains on the others, and even with your clues, I got nowhere :(

Great guess, but unfortunately it is incorrect. I can see why you though it could have been this film. The following misleading tagline was used on U.S. and Australian posters of A Ticket To Tomahawk from 1950.

Now back to C223. This film is also a comedy western. but this one is actually funny. Hopefully to assist and narrow  down the time period I will reveal that the film is from the 1930's.

I am sorry the other three remaining unsolved images are proving to be a problem. Some final clues will be forthcoming soon.

  • C223 Destry Rides Again?
  • edited April 2023
    C221.  Ghost, but I cheated
  • C218.  Chinatown...I knew I knew this one, but couldn't pick it...so again cheated.

Not that one. Think about a couple of years earlier films.

  • C221.  Ghost, but I cheated
    Correct. Ghost from 1990.

C218.  Chinatown...I knew I knew this one, but couldn't pick it...so again cheated.
Correct as well. Chinatown from 1974.

I wouldn't call it cheating. Sometimes you can't place the images, and other times you may not have seen the film. Sleuthing is what I would call it.

      ( John )

  • Now a final clue for C220. A famous historical figure in history.

You actually have named the correct answer that appears among those three titles. Which one then? Another clue is that a song featured in the film became a U.K. chart hit in 1975.
  • C220. -Lincoln?
Yes it is Lincoln from 2012.

The film won Daniel Day - Lewis his third Best Actor Oscar, along with a Best Production Design Oscar as well.

Likely Belle of the Nineties then with (Electric) Memphis Blues being 5he hit

Sorry but incorrect. To perhaps put some people out of their misery, I will now reveal the answer for C223 is actually Way Out West from 1937. Following below is my original posted image followed by the  22'' x 28'' half sheet where the image originated from.

The clue that I gave mentioning that a song featured in the film became a U.K, chart hit in 1975, referred to the Laurel and Hardy with The Avalon Boys version of The Trail Of The Lonesome Pine.

     C224

     C225

     C226

     C227
Four more images for you to have a think about.
  • c225. Cat Ballou

  • c225. Cat Ballou
Correct. Cat Ballou from  1965. Stubby Kaye and Nat King Cole pictured below.

  • C226 is the poster for A Few Good Men (1992) - took me a little while but I knew it was a Tom Cruise film

    Peter
  • C226 is the poster for A Few Good Men (1992) - took me a little while but I knew it was a Tom Cruise film
Correct and well done. You hung in there and your perseverance paid off.

  • A couple of clues for the two remaining unanswered  images Both of them I am thinking are a little difficult to recognise, so here we go then.

C224 has the image of a well known and respected film and stage actor in a scene from a film that isn't from a genre that it may appear to be.

C227.  I am thinking that if you can make out who the well known actor is, then the name of the film is achievable.

    Good luck.
  • A final clue for C224 is that some travelling is involved.

A final clue for C227 is that a search is involved.
  • C227 - Night Moves (1975). I thought that was Gene Hackman so went on a search of his films and found it.
