It is The Hitch-Hiker from 1953.
I have viewed the film in the past, and I can thoroughly recommend this tense little thriller, excellently directed by actress Ida Lupino. William Talman is terrific as the villain.
X77 is Vicki. I only knew this because I recently auction a still of Aaron Spelling with his then wife Carolyn Jones. In researching it I learned he had been an actor for many years before becoming a legendary producer. Vicki was one of his movies.

Correct. Vicki was a 1953 release. Good one Bruce.
A further X78 clue is that the film is a 1950's colour western. If you combine this information with my earlier war hero clue it should be possible to work out the answer,

That implies Audie Murphy. He made 2 westerns in the 1950s. Destry and Ride a Crooked Trail. Looking at images, I am guessing Ride a Crooked Trail
O.k., you have correctly worked out that the actor mentioned in my clue is Audie Murphy, but it isn't the correct name of the film. Hopefully we are on our way though to solving the film's title.
I need to point out that Audie Murphy made 18 western movies, plus one film set during the Civil War, in the 1950s. With the exception of one western film Cast A Lomg Shadow and the Civil War film The Red Badge Of Courage, the remaining 17 films were made in colour.

Interestingly the above American poster artwork was used in an original Australian newspaper advertisement, which wasn't the normal thing to occur.
Another film image to challenge you.
Dr Blood's Coffin (1961)
Good Sat night drive in stuff
The above Australian Doctor Blood's Coffin daybill, due to Australian censorship guidelines was a very toned down poster indeed.
Some obscure good time rock 'n roll this time around.
Go Johnny Go (1959)
A good lighthearted showcase for rock n roll artists Chuck Berry, Richie Valens, Jackie Wilson and Eddie Cochran
Joann Campbell was the featured artist in the scene.
Probably the most unusual, and also the most challenging image featured here to date.

Audie Murphy rarely rode a gray horse in his many western films. He was a horse lover and a very accomplished rider.
