The Astor auctioned off a pile of posters. I just picked up a collection from someone who bought at the auction and kept the catalogue. Cool stuff up for grabs...anyone got a time machine?
Sorry to inform you Reg that it is a re-release daybill. The original daybill would have United Artists printed on it . There is an original Australian United Artists one sheet image that has been sighted.

But there is no image? Was there one and it was taken down?
One day when I get a chance I'll scan the whole catalogue, full poster descriptions, more images (not all) and price estimates that will make you cry...
eg
Vertigo Daybill $50-$70 Time Machine Daybill $140-$160 Pinocchio Daybill $150-$200
King Kong is amazing! Does anyone know if this is first or re release?
The King Kong poster would be from the Australian 1952 re-release. The poster has the changed in Australia censorship wording of Not Suitable For Children, which replaced the Not Suitable For General Exhibition rating during the year 1948. A beautiful poster if you take the time to enlarge it.
That Kong is awesome!! First early australian paper I see from the film. I want it.
The Australian one sheet design is similar to one of the original U.S. 1933 one sheet poster designs of King Kong. We have sighted images of the 1952 Australian re-release daybill format previously but to my knowledge the Australian 1952 re-release one sheet image hasn't been displayed before on the web. Please correct me if I am wrong here. In any case a very rare poster. David mentioned earlier the estimate was $1,000 -#3,000 so it would be good to know what the poster actually sold for at the auction that was held on Sunday the 5th of May, 1996. it would have been a bargain for someone as the similar design original 1933 one sheet poster King Kong poster sold for $97,000 in 1999, only three years later in the U.S.A., as per eMovieposter.com Auction History records.
A question for David regarding # 62 ''Spellbound''. In the catalogue listing, and due to the discussion earlier regarding this title, I am curious if the poster being auctioned was an Australian daybill and if so was it the original release United Artists poster?

Interestingly the description in the catalogue says:
" King Kong (1933) The most famous movie monster - great poster art. An erxceptional image, Kong appears as he does in the film. Very rare 1 Sheet Aust. (re-issue, poss. '42)

The censorship rating definitely rules out 1942, along with the fact the poster had it been 1942 it would have almost certainly had the 4 star logo appearing on it.

Plain stupid in my mind.
Does Dave have any sense of really when he talks to his consigner's?

It was held before I was living here so don't know anything about it. John or Lawrence may know more.
eg
Vertigo Daybill $50-$70
Time Machine Daybill $140-$160
Pinocchio Daybill $150-$200
French re-issue (57 x 78cm) estimate: $70-$90
But the dam internet has certainly pushed prices up!!
